Lot of punk bands have some very deep, meaningful lyrics about politics and the state of the world. Bad Religion's singer is a professor at Cornell university and a lot of their music is very lyrically intelligent.

I'm a huge fan of The Decemberists. They're recording a new album right now and I'm super excited. Late to the party, but I just saw them in concert for the first time last year. I'll probably take off work the day the album drops.
