Goes back to when we were a primarily a puritanical agrarian society and people got up way early to do farm chores first thing in the morning.

Like a lot of things, the conservative mindset conflates traditional with superior, even after the purpose and usefulness of the tradition has long past and most people barely remember why we did it like that... and then we never change things for decades like daylight savings time or marijuana prohibition.

I think mine was at 8 but then senior yr it changed to 9, but you still have to wake up early depending on how far away it is. It's truly fucked up that we force high schoolers to get the least amount of sleep, when they need it the most.

At my school, Freshman were forced to do the late schedule (which was roughly 9 to 3) but from Sophomore onward you were able to choose. I always opted for the (again, roughly) 7:30 to 1:30. It just felt great to be out that early, and whether I went in at 7:30 or 9 I'd be dragging my ass in the morning anyway.

Yeah, school starting at 7 never made sense to me, even as a little kid (let alone a teen who had trouble waking up at 5:30 every morning to go to high school). 8-4 or 8-3 is a much better schedule.

What bothers me, looking back, is that there was no break between classes. I felt I learned better when I had a 10-15 minute break between periods as it gives my brain a chance to actually process what I was taught. I'm one of the few that would prefer to go to class at 9, get off at 4, but have breaks between classes and classes only last an hour. No double classes.

Only enough busses for high school, middle school, and elementary.

So you stagger the start times giving the little kids the late start so that they aren't standing at the bus stop in the dark

Yeah, I was lucky enough to get dropped off in the mornings before I was old enough to drive.

The bus ride home in the afternoon took over an hour. Was so glad to have that extra hour of sleep in the mornings.

When I could drive I always took French as my first class constantly because the teacher liked me, I got my final report one time and I was tardy to 30-40% of the classes and still got an A.

I know that in college last year I would frequently be up until 1/2 in the morning trying to get things done. "Homework" was code for here's what I need you to do, I'm not going to give you proper instructions on how to do it, figure it out yourself.

CA passed a law that high schools cant start until 8:30 based on research of teens sleep patterns. Apparently theyre physically wired to fall asleep late and sleep later in the morning.

My daughter likes the later start, but it does push after-school activities farther into the evening. I wish there had been an exception for certain classes like marching band to be able to start earlier.

mine started around 820-830 but had to get to my bus stop around 715. was a 45 min drive most of the time yeah

i was frequently late for the bus and had to take a diff one that arrived around 8ish so i'd be about an hour late to 1st period or something like that. iirc the school had marked me tardy like 60+ times during my junior or senior year idr. it was tough, dude!!!!!
