Every gacha game is different but the short answer is for Square's games, you usually do not have to buy anything to complete the game, however there's all kinds of side content that will be extremely difficult without buying things. Additionally they like to hold your OCD hostage. They'll give you sephiroth for free with a wooden sword and sell you the masamune in lootboxes with a 1% chance. SE does shut down a lot of their games, but there are ones that's lasted a number of years; for example, War of the Visions is going on its fourth anniversary for the JP version and has been around 3.5 years for the rest of the world. The original Brave Exvius is on year seven, I think. With that being the case, and with this game not being steaming garbage in terms of gacha, it will almost certainly last at least a few years. For me it's kinda cool because I never played any of the side games outside of the original FFVII. The only real complaint I have so far is the story for the new characters is incredibly boring so far.
