I was going to facetiously responded with, "It's only anime if a Japanese person conceived it," but that would invalidate anime adaptations of stories that originated in other countries. Like, Journey to the West isn't anime because it's Chinese, not Japanese.

Transformers is kind of a checkmate there.

Actually, Transformers was based off of a Japanese toyline from Takara.

Anime is just a word from Japan that means cartoon anyway. If it's shows from Japan there are a lot of borderline projects with things done all over the place.

Avatar: The Last Airbender was co-created and produced by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko at Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, California. Its animation was mostly done by South Korean studios JM Animation, DR Movie, and MOI Animation. According to Konietzko, the series was conceived in early 2001 when he took an old sketch of a balding, middle-aged man and imagined the man as a child. He drew the character herding bison in the sky and showed the sketch to DiMartino, who was watching a documentary about explorers trapped at the South Pole.

If it had to be specifically animated or written in Japan it doesn't qualify for either.. but is there a word for cartoons from South Korea? It falls under that then a bit..

Was animated by Toei, a Japanese animation studio based on a toyline by Hasbro, an American company. But no, it's not anime because it doesn't look like anime. Meanwhile Avatar isn't an anime even though it does look like one.

Hmm. I've confused myself with that one.

I personally agree that its not, but it borrows enough from shonen tropes and anime, that if someone wants to all it anime, I'm not going to argue the point.

True, but specifying anime brings to mind an entirely different set of shows than just saying cartoons.

For me, I think anime refers to artstyle. Like, for example, most anime is Japanese, but Hitori no Shita/The Outcast is Chinese and Castlevania was made by Netflix, but I consider both to be anime. Avatar is decidedly not anime.

A lot of 80s/90s cartoon animation was done by Asian studios. Just look at the Thundercats intro.

Now IDK why people say Arcane is anime. It was done by a French studio.

People always treat this as a mark against A:TLA when it's actually a feather in its cap.

"Friend, you really need to check out A:TLA, it's so good!"
"Isn't it anime, though?"
"Fuck no."
"Oh thank god! Sure, I'll give it a shot."
