If they want to make a scary movie they should just make a movie about paying your bills and title the movie, "The Taxman."

Tell me if a movie is scary and I'll tell you that you're a pansy.

Horror movies are my favorite genre and I've forgotten more than most people watched. Seriously, for October I generally watch one or two a day until the end of the month.

That said, only a very few actually unnerved me. The vast majority of horror fans are into gore or jump scares, and both of which are an immediate turnoff to me. This is in no way chronological, just off the top of my head;

Autopsy of Jane Doe had a really unsettling atmosphere. Awesome lore and worldbuilding, wish we saw more of it.

REC 1 had me leaning back in my chair in fight or flight for the last five minutes.

Sinister has an amazing soundtrack and the snuff films are brutal. I'm not ashamed to say in theaters, the lawnmower made me jump to the next zipcode. My favorite shock scare of all time.

Saint Maud is deeply uncomfortable and the writing is fantastic. I've never had the last literal one second of a movie make me think about it for months/years after, but here we are.

The taking of Deborah Logan was a lot of fun. Really clever plot devices and routes forward in the story.

The Descent with the EU/UK ending is sublime.

Trying to avoid the classics or A24 crap if I can help it.

Gummo is a good example of a movie that is not horror but is one of the most creepy movies ever made.

a few days ago i looked out my window (around 3 am) and saw a car in the driveway that didn't look familiar to me. i started having racing thoughts about burglars so i freaked out and slowly walked to the front door window downstairs. was thinking about how i was gonna survive this situation. then i saw that it was my bro's car and it just looked different because of the lighting lmfao

also at the time i had gone 3 days without vaping. this panic attack had me vaping again ffs. now i can't stop bro

also i nearly tripped over the Roomba too that was parked near the door. made a loud noise which made my anxiety worse.

it seems so silly to me now but at the time it was pretty bad for me emotionally

It's like saying a drama movie can't be sad because "it's not real bruh"

Good horror doesn't need to literally scare you to be effective. The OG Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an absolute bone chilling horror film but it's not like I'm physically scared for my life when I watch it. It executes atmosphere, dread, hopelessly, macabre imagery so well. It's the kind of movie I watch and start thinking "what if this was me in this situation?"
