It came out 17 years ago. The open world games that compared to it back then were mostly unmatched.

Because it was an excellent sandbox game. The fact that you've never actually played a worse one speaks more to you not playing the genre than anything else.

Immersion was the main selling point. No other games at the time offered that level of being in the game.

Oblivion was incredible.

Skyrim was my 1st TES game.
That game made me grab morrowind & oblivion. Ive started playing morrowind some time ago and skyrims solstheim mirrors it so far from what ive seen...in a good way. Whenever i beat Morrowind is when id get into Oblivion tbh.
