Yeah, basically once we hit PS3/Xbox 360, "next gen" stopped having meaning. Graphics have hit a plateau. Things like draw distance, lighting, and textures have stopped progressing by leaps and bounds. "Next gen" basically just means more shadows and god rays, higher resolution, and maybe higher framerates. That's about all there is to do nowadays to make graphics "better."

Well Steam Deck is way more powerful than Switch

I'm a few hours into it, and I'm not really getting the hype at all. If anything, it feels like a an RPG that was made during the playstation 1 era. It feels like a worse version of the witcher to me. There's a lot dialogue choices and talking like the Witcher, but the way you interact with the world is so clunky. You click to move places. You have to loot every mob individually. There's quite a bit of load time. I would have liked the game so much better if you can just walk like any other third person adventure game.

Part of the allure is supposed to be the freedom, but I feel like the choices seem to be be, do you want to fuck yourself over? No, well roll this dice to see if you're fucked over anyways. Then there's all the characters rushing you all the time so you're too afraid to spend time exploring. Oh man, the parasite is going to eat your brain anytime now. This party member will kill all of us if we don't get it fixed the next night This guy needs to eat your magic items, and the condition is only getting worse. You better resolve this goblin conflict NOW!

I mean... yeah, within the story there's a sense of urgency, but you're not sitting on a real time limit. You can take your time to explore literally everything with no problems. At least, that's true in Act I.

I'm leaning toward getting a Steam Deck to play games on since my PC still handles normal, everyday work tasks just fine. Plus with all the chips and shit being expensive right now upgrading my PC would cost an arm, a leg, and some toes.

it seems like act 3 will run like shit on my pc. haven't reached it yet but based on performance metrics yeah it's gonna tank.

still gonna be playable on my system but ill have to put up with 30-40 fps probably. maybe even worse =/

so in a way baldur gate 3 is sorta next-gen yeah. maybe half next-gen

idk how the steam deck will handle it
