I can understand the brain still having thoughts while we sleep, but feeling like were IN them with full awareness and senses and infinite possibilities is pretty wild.

No we still don't fully understand the purpose or mechanisms of dreams.

Just parts of it and some solid guesses.

I don't know what they're for, but I continue to find them incredibly fascinating. You never know what you're going to get. It can be something fun, terrifying, or heartbreaking. And it always feels 100% real in the moment. I still remember this one dream where I met this girl and we really hit it off, and we agreed to meet again later on, and of course that's when I woke up. I felt so crappy afterward, like I really lost someone forever.

I wish I knew what purpose they served other than meddling with my emotions.

I thought it was a result of your brain cleaning up your memories while you sleep. Going over everything, tossing the useless, saving the special, etc, and that's why dreams were so often bizarre because it's just a disparate collection of memory fragments.

Or did I just make that up?

what does scientology say about it? never heard. I thought that scientist had come up with a good reason for why we dream. Don't almost all mammals dream, though? for sure dogs, do. It must have happened very early on in primate evolution. What if dinosaurs used to dream? That would be awesome

Dreams are your brain's way of reminding you to go to school naked, take an Ancient Egyptian Algebra test that you didn't study for, lose all of your teeth, and fall from an enormous height. Bonus points if, at some point during the whole affair, you find yourself being eaten by an angry, Cro-Magnon carrot.

Dreams can be so fascinating!

Just last night, I had a dream I was in the middle of a sea to hold the chain of a sea microphone and pull it up now and then so that its generator would run. But I didn't want to do that, so I affixed an empty plastic bottle to the chain, which apparently would automate the powering of the generator.
Inexplicably, I wasn't in the middle of the sea, but a short distance from a tropical island, and the dark waters had turned so clear and blue I could see the sandy sea floor.

I was a little spooked I'd be attacked by a shark, but I knew how to swim in a such way that sharks would ignore me. Apparently, the method was to be on my back and push my hands back and forth parallel to my body.

Once I had made it to shore, I walked up a forested hill and discovered this island was teeming with life. Birds, badgers, and various other mammals wre everywhere. They weren't hostile or bothering me, though. Although I had been in the sea, I wasn't wet. Shortly after cresting the hill, I was on a footpath of a maintained park road. I came across a framed map, like the ones found on nature park trails. From it, I could discern how to get to a nearby city.

A short while later, I entered a large and populated grocery store. However, for some unexplained reason I had become a squirrel, necessating that I take much care in sneakily collecting the items I wanted lest I be caught and thrown out.

Soon after, I was in human form again, driving a maroon Fiat X1/9 to a drive way of a home, where my grandpa was tinkering with a radio placed atop a green trash bin. He was happy to see me, for it was he who had personally assembled the very Fiat X/19 I was driving.

Then I woke up.

I had the damnest weird one some months ago where I was dreaming some random stuff I think and then I became aware and kinda low key rattled, as two nerd looking types entered my dream state ...

"Don't mind us, we're just running some diagnostics" as the 2 walked towards some terminal that was apparently there all of the sudden....

I was...stunned really, ...never dreamt stuff like that before....
Anyway, after some dismissive sighs and condescending groans from the duo I somehow just bailed out of there and waked up.....

Heh, no funky grass I ever smoked came anywhere near giving me an experience like that...

Sounds like a lucid dream.

That's when different parts of your brain are active during a dream, and you are able to maintain low level awakened type consciousness while still in a dream state and take control of the dream. It's sort of the good opposite counterpart to sleep paralysis and night terrors.

I've had those lucid dreams on occasion over the years to varying degrees. One unfortunate side effect seems to be the sooner you realize you're still dreaming, the quicker the dream state slips away and you wake up.

There are some methods you can use to try and induce a lucid dream, I used to be really into it and some of the methods actually work, but they aren't super reliable. Maybe if I had continued to practice them?

Sleep seems important for a lot of memory consolidation processes, but this seems unrelated to dreaming as the action all happens outside REM sleep. Not sure there's been too much progress in understanding dreams, but this is not really a literature I keep a close read on.
