No one's ever really been able to explain it to me.

Echo chambers don't challenge you to consider other perspectives.

That said, nowadays the accusation of a board being an echo chamber is immediately suspect - with good reason.

Look at this way: leftists are able to thrive when left on their own while right-wingers simply cannot since they need outcasts to pile their hatred on.

What could be wrong with believing things falsely because everyone around agrees with your potentially insane beliefs?

Certainly used unironically by the same people that create their own echochambers.

My thing is, my childhood was in the 90's when hating nazis was the default. People trying to call that into question on a large scale is a very recent thing. People trying to gaslight that being anti-fascist is horrible is a very recent thing.

I'm not budging on the position that nazis are terrible, useless people and that there will never be a circumstance where the world needs them. Some people say that means I'm in an echo chamber, but those are the very people going to cult rallies and worshiping a reality show star as a literal god... sooo...

But how do you KNOW that you support LGBT+ rights unless you sit down and have a friendly dinner with bigots who want them all dead? You have to consider their viewpoint as being equally valid, you know!

Well duh

I am absolutely shocked to see people almost immediately starting to act like not cultivating an echo chamber means you have to host friendly dinners with literal Nazis and people who want to genocide the LGBTQ community.

if an echo chamber fills with hateful views each poster's hate reinforces and encourages the same hate from other people in the chamber who return their own hateful views.
This causes a rise in the feelings of hate in all people in the chamber which potentially could lead to violence or other extreme behaviour

Why do people assume echo chambers are formed without consideration of alternatives to things they believe and support?

Im well educated on conservatives. I have no interest in associating with them, for example.

Echo chambers are only good if everything said in them is 100% accurate and correct.

Any error, misinformation, or bad reasoning that gets picked up by three crowd becomes "fact." and it is nearly impossible for any one person to change it, as they will invariably get drowned out.

So sure, echo chambers are great, assuming the hivemind within is literally never wrong.

If you're only hearing what you want to hear, your never actually learn anything.

If you wanna be left behind without knowing what's going on just to get upset later, then an echo chamber is for you!

Okay, we need to take a step back on what echo chamber means because not everything is political. Meaning not every echo chamber is rooted in political agendas.

How many conflicting opinions do you need to be not an echo chamber?

I think it's funny how the topic went into a "duh, why should we talk to the right wing nazis?" when my first image of echo chambers were the covid deniers and anti-vaxxers.

But yeah, in general, the issue is simple.

People don't want to discuss things, they want to hear how right they are, so they look for people they agree with and agree with them.

The result is a circle of a selected few (can be tens, can be thousands), enforcing their own view again and again, spiraling downwards because they blindly trust people they otherwise agree with.

And woosh, suddenly your "I'm not sure if the vaccine is save, let me take a look if others agree with me" get's step by step enforced into some "blabla, gen-experimental therapy, sheeding, population control" conspiracy bullshit.

Its an indication of a closed mind. Even if you have the correct opinion on a matter, its unhealthy to be completely closed off from what the rest of the world thinks

There isn't anything wrong with it directly. It just creates an environment where you stunt your cognitive development. It breeds a static mindset rather than one which is growing and evolving.

Because you may be in the wrong one and just end up loving a lie you're whole life. Like imagine if all the news you got was from Fox news and the people who watch it.
