Do you think having a good career is hard?

No. Ive come to learn over the past few years that Ive already peaked (at around age 32, three years ago).

All downhill from here.

Im expecting a big pay bump in the next couple of years, yeah. I already earn very well as it is, so all it will mean is that I retire earlier.

I somehow bumbled into a career Im exceedingly good at, but Im at a level I dont think I enjoy. Its more people management and admin than the actual work I was attracted to. Im actively wondering whether I should ask for a demotion. Even with a demotion, the pay would be comfortable.

I'm in management for a non profit. It pays terribly. I sent to college for almost two years then COVID happened. Even then my teacher for pre Cal was telling me that I shouldn't go to college. He said I was really good at self learning.

But it's hard for me to push myself in an environment such as my place of living. However as I watch my friends have families, or years of companionship. It reminds me how little time we all have, and that I better move now or regret will sink in more and more.

Yeah, things're going great for me. And even if there's a dramatic change of fortunes for me personally, my wife is doing even better financially.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

Yeah, I'm in academia and I never want to get promoted into a Dean or Provost type of position where I'm no longer teaching

Exactly. You get promoted because you are good at what you do, until the skillset thats valued at the higher levels change and you are no longer doing what you love.

Future kind of scares me honestly. My trade is dying and oddly enough not due to a lack of work but instead due to the shift in what people are willing to do for a living. People don't want to do physically demanding jobs anymore so I'm in a unique position where work is super easy for me to come by in fact I don't look for work it seeks me out but finding a place where I'll have good support from a staff with lots of skill and knowledge can be quite difficult. Covid only made the problem worse because a lot of the older experienced guys just said screw it and retired. Weird situation to be in but at least it means people will pay me very well to do what I do and I'll never be hard up for work.

It's a struggle ngl. My current job is hella boring can't stand it. I just got a new job with the government that I've been trying to get for the longest. GS7 target 12. Which in itself is good. I'm set for at least another 3 years, but idk if I'll like that job or the area. I just moved to Shreveport 6 months ago and don't like it. Now I have to make the move back West and not sure if I'm going to like that.

Then there's the issue of what happens after 3 years? I wouldn't mind climbing up the ladder I suppose, but then I may have to move again for my GS13 rank.

From where I stand right now life looks good, but I'm just tired. My first engineering job really left a soar taste in my mouth and I'm unsure if I even want to continue being an engineer.

No. Logic and sanity will die for a while when society collapses in 10-20 years. And those things are generally required for most jobs.

I honestly dont. The thing is, for as long as I can remember, Ive never had an idea what I want to do for an actual career. I dont regret living like that, because I dont define myself by my job. The problem is, it doesnt seem like the world is set up for anyone to be successful like this. I always just figured that Id be able to get by just doing full time work. And dont get me wrong, I am living comfortably enough, but I could definitely use more money.

The thing is, you always hear its never too late! but.. is that true? Im in my mid-30s and dont have any skills (at least, nothing that makes me really stand out) so I cant really be starting at the bottom of some low-paying job with the intention of working my way up. And I dont really have the time to learn something that wont lead to a well-paying job right off the bat.

Its like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have no real direction. And my only career goals are nonsense like I dont want to base my life around my job, I want to work close to home, I dont want to work late shifts, I want holidays off, I dont want to be stuck at a desk but also cant really do heavily labor intensive jobs so its like wtf am I supposed to do?

reasonably optimistic if i can hold down this job for at least four years

never mind the equity vesting over that timeframe, i've seen a pretty significant growth in skills/experience over the past year or so working here, already starting from an impressive resume

Yes.... its just finding work in that field in the first place. I graduated nearly a year ago and still can't find work in the tech field. Because everyone is looking for someone with experience rather than being willing to help train someone, for fear that they will leave.... which they probably will due to most companies at least around here not paying as well as they should.
