I don't know if it's due to the courses I'm taking or the fact that I'm surrounded by 18-20 year olds, but it seems like every time there's a new semester, the first day of class requires us to introduce ourselves in front of our classmates. The fact that I have anxiety and I'm required to talk about my hobbies and personal life in front of an audience is completely nerve wrecking and makes me think they're being presumptuous. I figure if I'm going to be anxious, I might as well do something ridiculous so I can spread the point across.

"HI class my name is _____. I am the first of my name, king of semantics, the keeper of secrets. I have no pronouns. I have no gender. I am a fragment of your imagination. I only exist because your mind created me. Without your observation, I do not exist. You see me punching this kid next to me? That's just your imagination bruh, this man also does not exist."

That sounds like a terrible idea, honestly. But I'm actually curious on if studies show that introductions are actually helpful, or if most people just see them as annoying or anxiety-inducing with no benefits. I mean I guess it kinda helps a little with public speaking (although with it being a 1 time thing per class usually, I'm not sure there's a lot of benefit there), but I always found them extremely annoying. I think it's a tad out of touch and there are probably more effective ways to achieve the goal.

TC please I beg you, don't do this. I'm already embarrassed for you and you haven't even done it yet.

I'm also very open to suggestions. How about you guys create my introduction for my upcoming semester that's in 3 weeks and I promise you that I will use the best one and possibly voice record it.

FWIW, I'm a college professor and I don't do ice breakers. I also don't give a "participation grade" (for the very reason that some people have extreme anxiety around speaking in front of the class)

This. Just do a quick intro and don't make a big deal out of it. Even if it doesn't go as smooth as you think, who really cares what a bunch of 20ish year olds think of you.

Do it but then at the end add on "Also, my dad is Donald Trump" to make it clear you're actually not being serious, might even get some laughs(with you, not at you).

This explains why you were looking down on me in that Florida education topic when I said gen eds in college were a waste of time for some career paths lol. No wonder you think so highly to them. Its a beneficial part of your job. Thats not a knock on you at all either lol.

Its weird to be confronted by who we are (or arent). To coalesce it into fumbled words.

What's one interesting thing about you?

My go-to when I have to make students do introductions is name, major, year, and the last movie they watched. All simple questions that don't require a lot of thought while still giving you some insight into who they are.

Please don't TC, keep it short and simple.

"Hi everyone, I'm _____ I'm no good with introductions and I like [videogame/pizza/movie]. Thanks."
