I'm not greedy. I prefer to play the Lucky for Life game. $1,000 per day for the rest of your life (or 20 years, whichever is longer). I could retire quite happily on that. Second prize is $25,000 per year for life. Not enough to retire, but enough to help pay the mortgage. Odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 30,800,000, and second prize is 1 in 1,800,000, and the odds of winning any prize are 1 in 8. Minimum prize is $3 and the ticket costs $2. Fewer people playing, too, so you're less likely to have to split the jackpot.

The odds of winning the Mega Millions are 1 in 300,000,000, and the $1,000,000 second prize is 1 in 12,600,000. The overall odds of winning even $2 (the cost of the ticket) are a measly 1 in 24.

I bought a ticket. Haven't checked to see if it hit for a lesser prize but I know no one hit the jackpot so I'll prob buy another today or tomorrow.

I usually only play Powerball when it's in the near-billion range. I might get a ticket for this. If I'm ever going to win the lottery I might as well shoot for all of the lottery ever, rather than being one of those people constantly sinking money into the thing.

Not greedy? It's only $2 bucks to play...and even the lesser payouts will be more due to the jackpot size.

No; I dont play the lottery nor even follow it.

I played it once for kicks and giggles when it first hit a billion - it was just a wild new thing.

Is it hitting a billion more often these days?
I don't pay super close attention and have bought an occasional ticket here and there (i prefer scratchers) but I don't remember billion dollar lotteries happening every couple months in the past.

Over the years they have continually expanded how many states can take part in the lottery. Used to be a handful of states, now it's nearly all of them. More people playing = more money being funneled into the lottery = higher jackpots.

It first started to hit a billion When they upped the base ticket price to $2, but more recently it has increased due to all of the interest rate hikes. The advertised jackpot amount based on the annuity value, so the increased interest rates means it takes less cash value for the annuity amount to hit a billion.

They raised the price of the tickets in part to increase the frequency of large jackpots, as large jackpots help drive ticket sales

Once in awhile whenever the Powerball gets up to at least 200 million or 300 million then Ill buy a Powerball or two.

when the Powerball gets up high to a billion bucks thats when I say no to buying a ticket. Everyone else buys tickets like crazy on Wednesdays or saturdays the day of the big jackpot
