Prior to that, they just ate flesh in general. That bit of pop culture didn't come in until Return of the Living Dead in 1985 which is amazing and you should watch it.

Similar fact is that sunlight wasn't lethal to vampires until the movie Nosferatu came out. They were often depicted as nocturnal, yes, but not killed by sunlight. So in the overall scheme of things, it's a very recent addition to the folklore.

All because they had to find an excuse to do more interior shots >.>;

Also Frankenstein, he never walked with his hands extended until he got the brain of a blind man in one of the Universal sequels
