Finished part of Origins with Yunica's storyline, but didn't want to play it two more times to see the canon intro into the first game. So watched Youtube to see what happened. Currently level 8 and am stuck. Lower level of the Shrine is locked and am stuck. Anyone finish this one for advice?

Yes, have you rescued the prisoner on b1 of the Shrine? You receive a tool that can be used on b3 of the Shrine to find a hidden doorway to advance

To provide a little more detail depending on where you are at.

upon defeating the first boss and entering the dungeon, you should make your way down to b2 to find 2 keys, the treasure box key and the cell key.

Once you obtain both keys and open all the chests, you can head back to b1 to free a prisoner and obtain a tool to help you fully explore b3 The mask of eyes. On b3 you will be searching for 2 more keys, the Ivory key and the Marble key. You can use the tool near a statue to find a hidden doorway. You will also need to touch some of the statues to warp to other areas on the floor.

Have the Mask of Eyes and freed the prisoner. After playing Origins, surprised how easy it was to find two important NPCs. I'll try that later, thanks

Sounds like a game best played with a walkthrough handy.

The vampire boss is complete dogshit and one of the worst designed bosses in any RPG. Feels like it's complete dumb luck to beat that asshole

Yep, Vagullion is infamous, and the bane of many players existence. Its probably the longest boss fight in the game based on how its attack pattern works. May I ask what difficulty you are playing?

I think the only other boss that poses a serious challenge is the last boss.

The strategy for Vagullion is pretty simple, but regardless, the fight takes a while. When the fight stars, move closer towards the boss and when he transforms into the smaller bats, follow along the edges of the room in a clockwise or counterclockwise rotation. When the swarm starts spread out, The goal is to keep as close to the swarm of bats as possible as the boss will pull them closer into a group to chase you that will be easier to avoid then the spread out bats. The problem areas will be the corners when the tiny bats are spread out. Make sure not to stay to too far ahead as periodically the boss will pull the bats in and form his true form. Thats when you have a very short window to hit him. When he turns into bats again, try to get close to the walls and continue the clockwise or counterclockwise rotation. Keep up the pace and you will eventually wear him down with minimal damage.

I beat him after an hour. The hit window of like .25 seconds was crazy. I mostly did what you posted, but got lucky and he didn't expand his bats to cover the entire screen as often that time. If I saw the red swirl where he was going to reform, I'd charge in like an maniac to try to get one hit in.

What difficulty are you playing? Glad you were able to get through it! That very narrow window of vulnerability is what makes the boss a pain in the ass and taking damage from the little bats sucks.

A lot of people recommend Ys 1, but boy is it rough. I can see why it was influential at the time, but I felt the exact same way about that boss. All but one boss is either way too easy, or stupidly hard. You can't even grind to make it easier. Luckily Ys 2 feels a lot better designed.

While I can see why people find the game rough, I feel most of the boss fights in the first game are similar to a puzzle where you need to observe and solve the best way to damage the boss. The second game feels more like playing a bullet hell game where dexterity and avoiding attacks to damage the boss is the prime focus.

I have beaten the first game on Nightmare mode, and the second game on Hard. I intend to complete the second game on Nightmare soon.

Playing the DS version might be a better course of action. The bump fighting........no just no

I don't know about that. I see more people recommend playing more modern Ys games than Ys I and II (and even less people recommend playing the game in sequential order because there's frequently no reason to with all the gameplay jumps you'd run into doing that, and that's even more compounded with Nordics coming soon), and only recommend those with the caveat that they're very different from the rest of the series.
