Cartoons definitely have better animation but a vast majority have no continuity or loose continuity thats only referenced in certain episodes. While there are monster/duel/adventure/filler-of-the-week episodes in anime, the bulk of most shows is still dedicated to an ongoing plot advancing toward some endpoint. The fact that its most shows also means that theres a vast array of genres and sub-genres that all have continuity as well.
