If being stuck in a situation like this is going to make you late for work, call your employer and tell them. Be thankful mobile phones exist to let you do that; 50 years ago youd been SOL. Getting fired over this should be considered unfair dismissal.

None of that changes the fact that we need to reconsider if shutting down entire roads/bridges is necessary. Apparently they have a big problem with that in the UK.

Also people saying its just an inconvenience are oversimplifying it. Being late for work is one thing - missing your flight is another.

So take someone whose mental health is so poor theyre attempting suicide, and lock them in a cage thus making it worse?

Sure, why not. Thats what suicide watch already is (effectively torture), and society is both legally and morally okay with that.

Work is pretty much the least important thing to be missing in a situation like this. Just call you boss and explain.

There are other things to be more pissed about. Getting kids home, doctors appointments, flights, etc. People in these situations have a good reason to feel frustrated.

however, the most important thing obviously is saving the guy about to kill himself. Anyone with ethics would realise that.
