its not expensive unless you insist on getting concessions, which are outrageously priced

ppl only talk in movies if you go to shitty movies probably because this is quite frankly something i never experience. and the one time someone was talking incessantly throughout the movie i told them to shut the fuck up and they did.

communal experience for cinema is goated btw sounds like a skill issue

Saw both. Honestly both might be a 10. Oppenheimer was better, but I'd gladly get dressed up and see Barbie with a group again. Saw Oppenheimer in 70mm and I'll wait for VOD and subtitles to watch it again

The reason I go to my theater on a Tuesday is because I can get in for $5, even with a large soda it's under $10.

solution is to not go to a terrible chain like amc/regal/cinemark really

probably doomed if you live in a cultural wasteland like as a flyover state though

Where would a movie have 3 sets of subtitles? The only possible candidates I can think of are India and South Africa.

Its not uncommon here to have English, Vietnamese and Korean subtitles on films at the cinema.

There are a lot of Korean people in Hanoi.

The English subtitles in this case would actually be for Vietnamese people who are learning English. However, a lot of the films we get over here are Korean, so in those cases the English subtitles are for people who dont speak Korean or Vietnamese.

I spend $10 for a ticket at my theater chain and I think a large popcorn is $6. But I'm also a member, which costs $10 a month but comes with a free movie ticket a month plus a discount on concessions.

The only concession I buy is popcorn tho. Gotta sneak in the rest lol

i had alamo drafthouse's season pass which was 30/mo and paid off after two movies since a ticket was 17.50

also i abused the shit out of that thing since i lived a 5 minute walk away and they showed a great mix of hollywood/indie/foreign movies

bump

reminder that superhero fatigue is beginning. not that they arent performing well but they havent become the must-see events that they used to and most sequels in general are underperforming post-covid

the dawn of a new era is upon us

not sure if that is a good thing yet but yeah

not yet

the marvel dc crossover will happen. Once the super hero genre starts to no longer be the dominant genre, well see the crossover. Theyll tease it at the end of a shitty super hero movie and the entire world will erupt in speculation.

what will follow is another 5 years of different cross overs culminating in a grand finale

technically they are a necessity because it is the only way for movies to make significant money

so basically you are helping to contribute to the downfall of a once great artform

Yeah it's definitely interesting times.

Kinda seems like big budget Hollywood is fucked. There really aren't many novel IP like Mario and Barbie that audiences were clearly thirsty to see on the screen.

Oppenheimer is obviously as big as it is due to Nolan. But Hollywood has done a really pathetic job building up directors to be a selling point over the last decade.

Obviously they're going to have to deal with the strike too.

I just wonder where it's all gonna go from here.

Disney and Warner Bros aren't going to want to share. Disney and Sony can barely work together for just Spider-Man.

its unsettling that audiences only show up for IP they've not seen on the big screen before like barbie or mario.

very true re nolan and not building up directors. no one younger than nolan can really get butts in the seats except for maybe jordan peele, and that was basically a complete accident with get out being such a surprise hit. he wasn't necessarily a handpicked guy from the indie world to become a major studio guy.

rip cinema you had a good run

btw barbie made 23m yesterday lol

They're still making money. But see, it's tricky cuz the budgets correspond to the maximum amount of money you can actually make. Movies were actually profitable long before when movie theaters were cheaper and budgets weren't nearly as crazy. The problem with high budget is that now there aren't nearly as many viable studios because doing menial things in the movie business requires massive mark ups and extremely expensive actors

Video games went through the same period. They heavily devalued the worth of the games during Steam's heyday of selling full games for dollars. PS3/360 massively pushed the average development time and then pushed it even further the next generations. Smaller studios couldn't afford the 2.5 avg year development time, and we saw a massive majority of the mid-small studios just fall like flies within a decade.

All of this benefits the biggest few studios in both industry, give less variety and quality to consumers, and becomes extinction to anybody not major. Movie theaters being a luxury rather than necessity lets mid level studios survive better. We get less movies, but as consumers, we get way better variety and quality, just less movies and more series. Big studios earn less than they used to except in break out hits that happened from audience word of mouth and smart marketing.

all of the streamers are losing money

hbo max and disney+ tanking so hard are why their respective studio heads were axed
