An idea for a bit of immersion.
You know how you walk into the blue orbs and it gives you collectables?

Make it so every time you walk into one, there's an animation of your character reaching into the light, pulling out the actual object they got and showing it off.
Everyone likes a dramatic reveal.

Here is the second to last party member. Apparently needs to be a robot. Here it is. Robots are Xenoblade's thing so she gets more of a story.

Her name is something decrepit sounding like Persephone or Bellona, really just flip open a mythology book to a random page.
She's a combat-ready cyborg nun from an ancient cult and she was in stasis for a long time.
Long blond hair, blank expression, weird luminous teal eyes, mechanical from the neck down, conceals her appearance with dark blue robes. No headdress.
She is actually an ancient supercomputer that barely survived the world being reset.
The new world does not contain the things necessary to repair her and she is rapidly degrading.
She is using the cyborg avatar (one of the few things new machines she's compatible with) to try and bring someone to her physical location and preserve the important data and has collected before it's too late.
She has a quiet voice, a thick Scottish accent and sometimes there's static when she talks.
The party members give up trying to understand her pretty quickly.
She joins the party about halfway through, she sees them losing to the villains, takes off her disguise and exhausts a lot of her energy to save them.
You know that thing people do on the playground where one crouches behind someone and another pushes them over? Aloysius keeps getting people to help him push her over like that.
Her fighting style is OP melee combat but it's like Sharla's gun, she needs to stop and cool off often.
After her legs get severely damaged in a fight, the guy on the stretcher groans that she'll just slow them down and that they should abandon her.
The party ditches her and she runs out of energy for good shortly after.

Very important.

There's probably going to be a snow level. I think you should be able to slip on ice, freeze solid if you stay still too long and collapse into a snowball and roll down a hill if you're moving too fast in the snow.

Final party member. He joins 2/3 through the game. The team is complete.

His name is TORQUE MASTER.
He is a 49 year old man wearing lime green chainmail with a big yellow high-vis jacket over it. He has a mining helmet with a light on it. He is belligerent looking.
Also wears dark purple designer jeans and has an extension cord as a belt.
The list of things he hates most include de-escalation, being reasonable and paper.
Joins the party because he sees them being unorganised and assumes they know what they're doing.
Any time the party crosses a bridge he tries to get them to destroy the bridge afterwards.
His weapon is a big uprooted traffic light with all the lights painted green and the word LIVING written right beneath the word STOP.
His voice sounds like the Cobra Commander.
He has infinite health but is still shown getting beat up in some of the forced loss cutscenes for some reason.
For no real reason, he hospitalises at least four important characters trying to help the party at various points.

Now that the next Xenoblade game's team is complete, those other three characters can be repurposed as side villains and a plot can be made up.

The story should be the party being entrusted with important quests and repeatedly finding new ways to undercut the expectations and hopes of those who rely on them.
Sometimes even though they messed up big time they are given a second chance.

At some point they realise instead of taking ownership of what they've done, they can say they were sent by Colony 3 and defer blame. Then they go do whatever they want for a while and just tell people it's an important Colony 3 mission.
