I couldn't even classify it as a graphic design firm since it's so small-scale but it's a small local office that does design work for small businesses, stuff you'd see in strip malls.

I was called out on for not having professional experience despite having 15+ years experience in Photoshop and Illustrator and some of my design concepts popped up in public throughout the years. I was then called out on having not been to college and the interviewer condescendingly went "ah, self-trained, yep yep yep, 'kay.". After that the interviewer was asking me why I worked in retail for so long without having been promoted.

I don't have any issues with interviews and can maintain confidence but this one was a wreck. Part of me feels entitled and stupid for applying to something like this and not just continuing to work in retail or food service.

fuck them with a pinecone bruh. people will always do shit like this, no matter what the situation. you gotta be able to tell them where to shove it, and I'm only exaggerating by like 10 percent when I mean to literally say stuff like that to someone when they're putting you down.

"but it's a professional thing"

If anything, this is where you have to be even more ruthless. if you believe in what you're doing, and you're trying to get traction, be professional if it's someone connected to your scene, but if someone is putting down your work or experience, you need to at least be able to end the conversation on your own terms.

Why did they even bother interviewing you? Unless you lied on your resume this on them. I'd leave an honest review on Glassdoor about them.

Yeah, the amount of people that are either outright bad at interviews or are assholes for no reason that the applicant is responsible for are staggering. On the plus side, it clearly shows it's a place you're not interested in either.

Well, this probably was the problem.
The guy probably felt he needed to puff his chest... the "short man" (not sure if that's an appropriate term to use anymore).

Well, don't beat yourself up over it. I agree that the interviewer was an asshole. Use this experience as prep for the next one if possible.

Was this some kind of "Walk-In Interview" where anyone off the street could just show up.

Because it seems weird that he could read your resume, see your experience (or in his opinion lack there of) call you in for an interview and then complain you're not qualified for the job.

As someone who has be on several hiring committees and hired hundreds of employees... that guy was being and an asshole

Or maybe that guy was just doubling as an interviewer (as most small businesses have people doing multiple jobs), and he was afraid of more qualified candidates replacing him in a year or two.

Definitely sounds like the interviewer had some issues.

My worst interview was also at a very small company where the guy kept undermining my skills and experience for a one day a week unpaid internship.

Seriously fuck those people. If I was in your position I would just email them saying you saw a better opportunity for growth in your current position than his company.

I agree the interviewer sounds like an asshole BUT when youre trying to break into a new industry/career you have to be able to head off these types of questions.

why were you in retail for so longI had some sort of family/personal situation where stability was important

why werent you promotedit wasnt something I was passionate about so I spent my spare time on graphic design

do you have experienceheres my portfolio

etc

ya this, the main thing is you dont need to care cause that place sounds like trash.

but as someone whos interviewed many others and also broke into my field without a college degree, sometimes you can turn interviews around on them. If they ask you if you have any questions you ask what a challenging problem a person in your role would face, and then answer afterwards with what you do to tackle it. If they dont give you time to ask questions, you roll it into answers of others.

why were you in retail for so longI had some sort of family/personal situation where stability was important

this is one answer, or you can say without having a degree I really wanted to refine my skill set and master xyz aspects of the field before breaking into it or any creative way to demonstrate your value while answering the condescending questions.

Thats a good answer as well

the important thing is to be able to give a confident, well-reasoned answer in these situations. If you know you can do the job they are hiring for, assert yourself and demonstrate that you can

everyone has interviews that dont go well. Ive bombed my share for sure. Just gotta use those experiences to prepare for the next one

Idk why they bothered to interview you just to be an asshole about your work experience during the interview.

Not your fault, you likely dodged a bullet by not being hired by a clearly toxic person
