Let's try a hypothetical situation here: What would everyone's comments look like if he had spoke to me this way? If he had YELLED: "OUT OF THE WAY BOY!"? I wouldn't have let it bother me, I'm stressed about other things but I suppose I could've pretended to be offended too.

I'm 36 he's in his early twenties... Yes I'm Caucasian and yes he's African American... I'm screwed. I actually like this job and I'm making enough money to pay my bills AND put money into my savings. I'm screwed.

Make sure when you go into your HR meeting you inform them that the associate was "looking to be offended" that'll make them realize you did nothing wrong.

Heres an idea, stop calling adults boy to begin with. Best case scenario, you wont be assumed to be racist. Worst case scenario, you wont be assumed to be a tool.

As long as you don't have a history, you should be fine. Officially just stick to your guns that it was like how you refer to guys. Like "Me and the boys are gonna go out for some beers" style type of comment. You've got plausible deniability. Don't throw it away.

You'll probably just have it documented and need to go through a corrective action, like sit through a class or something.

If by chance you happen to be union. Youre in the clear. Most unions will damn near allow you to murder someone in cold blood and you'll just get a write up. If you do it 10 times, they'll take corrective actions.

idk, maybe if you're younger and haven't seen it used in media you wouldn't know. schools don't exactly teach all the ways white people were racist. but a white guy calling a black man 'boy' definitely has racist connotations. he could have just said kid, which is what most normal mid 30s people call 20 year olds

I think it's more normal to call somebody boy who you could have given birth to. 16 years is not a large gap. Kind of needed to be a 20-year minimum. But then if you were that much older maybe you would have been more aware of a possible racial connotation?

If you honestly didn't know that it had racist connotations, that's okay I don't think a lot of people do, I didn't either. You can't be expected to know every thing that was racist to 60(?) years ago.

But your best bet was to talk it out with him after the incident not letting him take it to HR. If your intentions were innocent and you were just trying to prevent an accident you should have made that clear to him then and there.

Your inability to communicate with him is probably going to echo your repeat failure to successfully communicate with HR.

also most companies won't do warnings for racist shit unless you're actually important. a while back I had to fire a Mexican woman for saying racist shit about black and asian coworkers and there was no warning at all. they even had my district manager come in to do it so she had no way to blame it on me
