Pokemon Colosseum is a good game held back by being really grindy when to comes to purifying Shadow Pokemon. That's really not helped by how bad some of the Pokemon you have to pick from were in terms of stats and movepool.

Gale of Darkness is a big improvement in the gameplay. Making it easier to purify Shadow Pokemon while also rewarding you for catching them was the best way to improve that whole system. Even the Shadow Pokemon were more fun to use now that they had more than one Shadow-type attack. And in general having more Pokemon to catch meant it didn't suffer from the first game' s problems with the roster being limited in viability. There's even new minigames to play, something the first game outright lacked!. About the only downside is the tone shift. The atmosphere in the first game is still pretty unique in the franchise, being like Fallout for an all ages audience. That being said, I don't mind it because it means the actions from the first game still mattered. It showed the positive impact Wes an Rui had on Orre that the region itself was starting to heal from its damage.
Agreed. Also, it could still have been more positive and shown the good impact of Wes and Co's deeds, while not having us play as a little kid on a moped who came right out of a generic Saturday morning anime (or whatever the equivalent time is over there)

The gameplay improvements were welcome, if only they built on what came before

Something else I like because it's different, especially for a Pokemon game.

The final boss, Fein. I like that since Wes was never heard from again in the next game, you can choose to believe that while disguised as Wes, Fein did enough damage to Wes' reputation to the point it was best for Wes to leave Orre. It's also cool that the last opponent is just some random guy.
Or you could say it didn't matter and that both protags were going to ride away together anyway.

That's what it is! I was wondering why I liked having her as Wes's partner when I was young, must have been subconscious reminder of Misty.

Also come on how could you have like gale more, they went from Wes to an obviously 8 year old kid on a moped... we went from the silly but cool interpretation of a cool guy and cool bike in colosseum to the lamest of the lame in xd.

I purchased XD first, under the impression that it would be the simplest, least time-consuming way to get Lugia and the Johto starters into Emerald (I can't remember if I did this prior to D/S, but I definitely did this well before HG/SS released); that was my sole motivation for playing the game, so my expectations were bottom of the barrel. It ended up actually being a fun game with a excellent soundtrack, so it made a hell of a good impression. Colosseum simply felt like more of a slog when I went back to play through it for Ho-Oh.

Nah, I would have liked it better if they went with the gold silver crystal approach in gale: you, a starry eyed upstart somehow meet and challenge the cool protagonist from the previous game in a friendly but still highly epic match. And beating him signifies a passing of the torch

If they'd done that, it'd feel less memorable considering it had to follow their approach in Colosseum: Wes, the cool protagonist from the current game somehow meets and and challenges the cool protagonist from the current game in a strange but still highly epic match though. And beating him signifies a firm grasp on the torch.

Did anyone else do that trick in agate village where you can temporarily separate from misty-knockoff and have wes run all by his lonesome for a bit while the AI desperately tries to follow you? I enjoyed doing that.

Yes. Doing that I also learned she can run significantly faster than Wes.

Honestly the names the NPCs get in these games are some of the craziest I've seen in any Pokemon title. Though most of them are in the optional stadium you can fight.

also somewhat related, I recently saw a video where a guy took a Pokemon and got it to have every possible ribbon it could. the mon originated from Colosseum and he's brought it all the way up to S/V with almost 100 ribbons. so that's neat.

Something else I didn't like in the sequel was being forced back down to level 5 at the start.
Level 5, where nothing has any good moves and you're going to see the same line up of opponents you would in a mainline game.

Going from two Eeveelutions and a Johto starter to a single Eevee and no Johto starter didn't help either. Looks even worse now that you can start as an Eevee in Mystery Dungeon or that Let's Go Eevee game.

I remember they were shit on back then for not having the same formula as the main titles.

Now all of a sudden people like them for the same reason.

yeah I remember being one of the few who loved these games back on the serebii forums. Not every game needs to be the same formula, mixing it up is fine especially since they were still releasing regular Pokmon games.

I recently played Colo and I still had a great time, top tier ost like a lot of console jrpgs in this era and the coolest protagonist in the series. He rides a massive motorcycle and uses bombs and shit. I found that gameplay wise XD improves in almost every way but the protagonist just isnt as cool lol.

Those are mostly just important characters too. Almost every NPC name of every random trainer is garbled gibberish that sort of resembles how a name looks like. Even as a kid I was confused because all the trainer names in GSC and RSE were normal-ish names, and then this game went off the rails for some reason.

At least XD was decent enough to let you evolve your eevee into whatever you wanted almost immediately.

If you started with two Eevees and got to pick two evolutions, that'd be another story. That'd be cool.
As is, it's a painful downgrade.

The one thing I give Pokemon Colosseum is that it gives the franchise some meat on its difficulty. It was designed from the start to cater to Pokemon Blue/Red/Yellow players who grew up, rather than children. Pretty much every other pokemon main line game, all the way up to the most recent entry, can be juggernauted with your starter. You can't really play Colosseum with Umbreon/Espeon the whole game.

Didn't like Gale of Darkness. It reversed all the good changes Colosseum did.

I mean, with level grinding you still can beat it with just umbreon and espeon, just like regular pokemon. But yeah after the first half of the game once you started capturing shadow pokemon that were really cool, you switched umbreon out and then espeon.

The fact that the game dealt exclusively in double battles is what's real interesting. Sometimes we forget how crazy that is tbh

Because it's a double battle themed region and if my character doesn't know this and carry two Pokemon around, it's like he doesn't know what's happening.

Personally, I'd rather not have another Eevee themed start. I'd rather have something different. Starters from different regions like in Arceus maybe. Or have a small group of mismatched pre-evolved Pokemon that live at the lab and you pick two to come with you.

I think you need to have all the previously available ones caught before the post-game ones start appearing. If you missed any, you have to run laps of the Snagem Hideout until they re-appear.

Thinking on it that's not a bad idea, I'm actually not invested in the eevee thing or anything like that either. Didn't question it as a kid but now I wonder why they chose eevee and his lutions. Maybe as a reference/homage to pokemon yellow? I dunno

Starting a playthrough. Might as well.

Last run I chose Bayleef, got a Toxic TM and tried to keep Umbreon in use, gave Misdreavous a chance because I heard it's good here and played more Colosseums to level up.

I don't really have any curiosity or schemes for this run yet. I just like the areas/music and want to revisit.
