for me it was always the person who sets it up and plugs everything in gets to choose the player numbers. a bit of reward for their work

Save scumming is okay, it's a single player game, no one is going to get hurt

That's fair. Outside of siblings, another good rule is who ever owns the system and/or game gets to be player 1. My buddy and I used to play a PS2 hack 'n' slash in college on his PS2, so he was player 1. Now we play it at my place on my system, so I'm player 1. That's just how it works.

When starting a new game, one of the first things you do is test out the fall damage.

I do this out of habit so much, to the point where it often becomes a mistake.

You want that full clip so you have it for the next encounter... but then you get caught reloading when you had most of a clip.

My bad habit probably formed from playing old school shooters like DOOM where there's a reload animation after each super shotgun blast, and the super shotgun is your workhorse/primary weapon for most mobs.

My habit definitely came from GoldenEye, where reloading only takes half a second no matter what weapon you're using

The "last elixir" problem.

I blame JRPG and its shape shifting boss for this.
Can't spend the elixir because you don't know if you're fighting the final form or not.

In peaceful places close doors behind you

For any NPCs that annoy you but you don't want to face any kind of karma penalty for killing them, just "accidentally" lead a group of monsters, cutthroats, etc. towards them and see if that'll get them out of your hair.

I think you shouldnt be able to see your feet, or reflection in a shooter

If you don't like a game, don't just ignore it and move on with your life. Go online and let others know how much you don't like it. Especially if it's a game you've never actually played.

Unlearning this trying to play Gaige in BL2 was rough lmao

When starting any game that's in first person, you have to look down to see if you have legs. If you do have legs then you need to stare at them as you move around a bunch and while jumping.

Never use items on random mobs, only boss fights.

Waterfalls should always have something behind them.

Any game developer that makes companion NPCs move faster than your walk but slower than your run should be disbanded.

In racing games, one person is obligated to run the track in reverse to fuck with everyone else

If all else fails, use fire.

Absolutely do NOT use your healing item because you might need it later

In FF games I sell almost all consumables, just using magic to heal.

hoard your skillpoints or whatever until you have enough for the skill that increases skill points.

I hate when its ambigious and I have to go back and forth in each path to make sure I don't accidentally trigger the next cutscene or whatever.

Rocks or cliffs with paint or markings mean they can be climbed

I always save a bunch just incase I trigger the story

I have to walk against a slanted wall or some big pile of props and mash jump to see what sort of parkour the game might let me get away with.

Skies of Arcadia is just about the only RPG I've played where items are better to use than magic.

Just remember, the CPU controlling a minivan with four flat tires can outrun you in a mint condition Lamborghini.

Run against the walls mashing the open button if there's any chance of secret walls.

Like in GTA where an old dude in an Esperanto is going 10 mph, then you just barely touch his car and suddenly he's Speed Racer. You will never catch him. He's gone.

This is one of those acceptable breaks from reality. Ammo being consolidated into one "pile" you can top up at any time is such a core part of the genre that it's super disorienting when a game averts it.

It's best if you just don't think about how you're carrying all that inventory
