People really need to be paying more attention to the riot beyond just hearing that it's happening. Pharmacies have been burned down. A kid fell off a supermarket roof and died. A lot of innocent people are going to suffer and die because of the damage done.

Three officers in the Rhone region were shot by a man carrying a rifle last night, French media have reported.

The officers were "ambushed" by someone who was hiding behind a wall when they were shot in the legs and groin, according to reports.

Riots get out of control by nature. You should be asking what social conditions incited people to take such actions. Riots are created by a high level of emotion, a sense of despair, and a sense that the social contract with them has been broken. Yes, it's not always rational or productive or justified in its targets, but that's not the point. The worst acts committed are not the point. That's merely a justification to ignore the underlying rot in society and then you'll act surprised and shocked when this happens again in a few years. It will if the underlying poverty, racism, and isolation are not addressed, and if the police do not stop acting as an occupying force, enforcing a particular social order. That's what causes this in the US and in France, and everywhere else it happens.

People rioted even worse than this in the US after MLK Jr. was killed. A lot of fucked up shit happened during that. Entire swaths of the city I'm currently in were burned down and stayed burned out for decades. Did the fact that they destroyed property and acted irrationally mean that their anger was unjustified and that we should have focused on the worst acts and cracking down? No, and even in the 60s, that's not what we did. Instead, we passed some of the civil rights and economic opportunity laws that were meant to address the conditions that created the riots. We didn't just rant about lawlessness.

Not sure what they're protesting. Even if you reject the claims that the police thought he was a threat, he's being charged with homicide, though I think it's a certain degree.

There would be no outrage here if the same thing happened. In fact there's been much worse incidents with little to no pushback by the general public. Americans should grow a spine.
