Without reading much, I feel like the #1 cause has to be how huge cars are today. Cars are a billion times safer for the occupants than 1981, and while I feel like they should be a little safer for pedestrians, the overall size now cancels any benefit out. There are some trucks on the road regular people(not construction, hauling, etc) drive that are so tall I doubt you'd even be able to see a person in such a place where you have a green light but must yield to peds in crosswalk when turning.

It blows my mind how little drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists give a fuck about other cars. They're so selfish/oblivious that they have zero self-preservation.

I remember watching someone blatantly blow a red light and being shocked, now it's a weekly occurrence.

Part of it's distracted driving but a large part is people not caring. I've seen so many drivers ignore not just a red light but a lit X walk to make turn on red.

This would be an argument if not for the fact that, for a while, it was going down. The rising numbers started around 2010 according to the article. It hasn't been this high since 1981.

Yeah youre right. I saw that and was just going to comment but you got there first.

I wonder what happened in 2010? Id be surprised if there wasnt a reason for why they suddenly started going up year on year. Maybe they changed how they calculated the stats? But that might just me being optimistic.

There's so much fuck shit on the roads now. SO MUCH. Blowing reds just cause, going straight in left turn only lanes, swerving your big ass SUV from the fast lane to the off ramp, just so fucking much.
So many people just think the rules should not apply to them sometimes because they think they're more important than that.
I just lost a friend like two weeks ago because these guys in a work van wanted to overtake a semi in a two lane and hit him in a head on collision. It's so fucked up. And people wonder why I don't wanna go anywhere.

One issue i see A LOT is people walking in the street at night.

I'd get the shit slapped out of me if I did that as a kid. Philly drivers did not care about pedestrians. It's weird to me now, living where I am, and people just cross into traffic not paying attention at all. They just expect the two ton death machines traveling at 40mph or higher to stop for them.

Saturday I watched someone turn the wrong way out of a gas station. Instead of stopping and reversing back into the parking lot and going the right way, they were like "oh the intersection isn't too far away" and continued until they could go the way they wanted. They drove around two cars blaring their horns

I have seen a lot of right turns from left turn lane and cars in a four lane road with left turn lane in between use either the left turn lane or the oncoming lane to pass. 70-80 in a 45.

Terminal levels of carbrain in this topic.

This is a direct result of U.S car-centric infrastructure and the fact that most people nowadays are driving around fatass SUVs/pickup trucks that have poor visibility from the front and are more deadly to pedestrians. While yes, there are some "evil jaywalkers" not paying attention to their surroundings, the only way this trend can be reversed is to impose restrictions on the designs of large cars/pickup trucks, and design our living spaces around alternatives to driving.

it's "car-centric" because it's big as fuck and spread out. What Europe does with public transportation is great but a lot of their cities were built before cars even existed. It's just not feasible in the US to have public transportation easily accessible to everyone, which means the majority of people need a car to go anywhere outside their own town/city, or to certain specific places. The town I grew up in had a train station, sure, but no buses or cabs so unless you have a car you're walking to the station or calling a taxi service that charges you $20 just to drive there. and also 90% of the roads had no sidewalk so have fun walking!

You can build sidewalks and establish bus service. These are choices. In many American cities, viable transit options (streetcars, trolleys, so forth) were removed to make way for cars.

Despite the size of the country, most people don't drive their cars to other states, they drive their cars within urban areas. American cities were also built for pedestrians and public transport, but they were destroyed in the mid 20th century to make room for more roads and parking lots. Bus, pedestrian and bike infrastructure can still be rebuilt if the government chooses to.

I was expecting to see somebody get hit last week. The positive thing is they were moving with the flow of traffic. The negatives are rollerblading backwards, headphones in, head down looking at their phone on a road with oversized sidewalks designed for bike traffic they didn't want to use.

Stuff like this is why I have no sympathy for people who slip on wet floors when theres a caution wet floor sign clearly in place.

Yes, OHS is important. Yes, holding businesses accountable is important. But accepting the consequences of violating common sense are just as important.

You know whats worse than a wet floor sign? Two wet floor signs, because think they are like goalposts and insist on walking right between them. Almost as bad as the mother who was threatening to sue our movie theatre because her kid got burned. How? He shimmied behind a candy rack, reached under the plastic covering, and put his hand on the hot dog rollers.
