Yes, I have, but it doesn't really get any more RPGish. The RPG parts are paper-thin and amount to mostly a developer's trick to not jar long time fans of the series. Arguably, it is less of an RPG than most action games are nowadays, and certainly less of one than Strangers of Paradise was.

Have absolutely 0 interest in HP or starfield. BG3 maybe just a little.

I'm like 30 hours in. It does get a little more rpgish but not by much. There's very little in way of customization. It's between ninja gaiden and the new god of wars

That's right, the new god of wars are more rpg than FFXVI

I fully believe that. The delineation between action adventure and RPG games often makes zero sense, especially when taking both JRPG and WRPG into account. God of War and Tears of the Kingdom are ultimately much more RPG than FF16 and Diablo, but they don't count as RPGs for... reasons.

Zelda never counts because there's no traditional leveling system. Sure there's a hidden exp system that decides what gear and creatures you face but you're not getting any new stats with a dingy thingy

I get that but it is so arbitrary

Ngl, none of these titles to me are worth full retail price. And after getting screwed over with diagaea rpg has turned me off of the fanchise as a whole. Along with how D6 was handled.

An "empty" level (That is to say, a level where all your stats increase by say, 5% rather than you getting any skillpoints or anything that effects gameplay along with the level) is functionally the same as no leveling at all though, especially in the hallway simulator type games where you aren't really even choosing where to go based on how strong you are and everything is just increasing its stats with you.

This seems to define FF16 from my time so far. All you can do is choose which skills to upgrade, but almost every action adventure game has that.

Putting runes or something in gear woulda went a long way for FFXVI

Far as I've seen, the gear is just flat out better iterations with no reason to use anything but the new shit

Also the half baked crafting system really doesn't mean much and is a waste of time if you're not regularly upgrading shit, and it's gotten rare for me to upgrade anything at all. Got all this money too with nothing to spend it on

this. i'm enjoying the game but this is my biggest gripe. there's like zero character customization. it's hilarious that Square tried to appeal to a wider audience by dialing back the RPG elements in FF16 when God of War Ragnarok was more of an RPG and sold like 11 million copies.

Every game is a strategy game because your expected to think of a strategy to get through a level.

Every game a character can move and jump around is a platformer.
