this overall genre seems to have a lot of history to it and i feel like experiencing diablo 4 without the context of at least one of the previous games would be kinda weird idk

I don't know how the cutscenes are in Diablo 1, but just watch the cutscenes for Diablo 2 (the remake ones, they are graphically superior and do justice tot eh original cutscenes) and diablo 3 cutscenes to get the story.

the story doesnt matter really in these games. Its all about finding loot and building up your character

Diablo 1 was released on Windows 95 on a compact disc. I don't think that you have Windows 95?

However, there was also a Playstation 1 version of Diablo 1, if you have a Playstation 1

probably your best option is Diablo 1 on GOG.com, which has been upgraded to Windows Direct X

I have the disc and surprisingly it worked on windows 7. Not sure about 10 or 11

Diablo 2 is the definitive Diablo game. D3 is D3, D4 is D4, but D2 is Diablo.

You should play Diablo 4 if you enjoy endlessly killing monsters, pulling that loot RNG slot machine. Backstory, gameplay, etc. aren't really factors in this genre.

thats just not true. sure its a minor part but some of us enjoy it.

Yes. Begin with clearing Hell mode in the original Diablo first before doing the same with 2, then 3, and finally 4.

Diablo lore has gotten so convoluted you may as well just play 4 since you won't understand anything anyway.

The story is like

Diablo 1: there's a bad guy named Diablo and you need to kill him and trap him in a soulstone

Diablo 2: the guy from the first game who decided to shove the soulstone into his own head is slowly turning into Diablo and you got to find and kill him. Oh by the way Diablo is actually just 1 of 3 prime evils and there's also these 5 lesser evils.

LoD: Baal is trying to corrupt the bullshit rock we just made up and if he succeeds it will cause bullshit and even though you eventually kill Baal you fail anyway and an angel has to destroy the bullshit rock to stop even greater bullshit.

Diablo 3: did you know angels are also bad guys? Also humans are secretly all half angel/half demon and the world you live in was created in a joint effort between exactly one angel and one demon. Oh Diablo has a daughter too. I figured we should just let you know. Oh and we have the super bullshit rock you can use to trap all the lesser and prime evils at the same time and there's definitely no problem putting all your eggs in one basket like this nothing can possibly go wrong.

RoS: there's an angel who is so mad that his bullshit rock was destroyed that he destroys the super bullshit rock.

4: demon mommy files divorce paperwork against angel daddy. Kids are caught in the struggle. Kids are given COVID to make them immune to COVID.
