I would just move him joining to the very end of chapter 4, and/or, maybe with side quest requirements. Think Shadow in FF6, a secret way to save him, otherwise he dies/is trapped etc Could even be a level limit. If your army is below lvl 30 when you reach him, you get him. Or maybe a time limit. So not a nerf to his power. But to his availibility. What I really want are monsters getting lots of fun buffs. And math/perfume being nerfed. And magic/archer casting times getting buffed. So late game magic is more usable. Oh. In the original is always Squires and Chemists, then Knights and Mages, then Monks and Higher Mages, ect. You never see anything with like a bunch of Mimes and a few Bards/Dancers, you don't get a whole lot of Samurai or Ninjas, almost never any Calculators. They story battles need a huge revamp, imo.
