When Texas let their slaves free, I think. Took them a long while to actually do it after the Civil War, along with a couple other States, and this is in celebration of that.

Now for the Wiki answer -

is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Deriving its name from combining June and nineteenth, it is celebrated on the anniversary of the order by Major General Gordon Granger proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865 (two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued)

The reason Oklahoma has a panhandle is because Texas cared more about keeping slaves than they did having that territory.

Well that's strange. We are all slaves to the super rich and powerful the last time I looked around.

I get that. I'm just saying, it's okay to ask questions online without Googling because pretty much everyone does

There is a reason why, "LMGTFY," gets you a moderation for trolling

A) I feel like TC has a history of asking disingenuous questions, so the choice to ask it here instead of Googling is already a bit sus
B) While it's okay to ask questions online, learning to find answers to objective questions is a valuable skill - especially with the internet

Holiday celebrating the end of slavery in America.

Ah sounds like a pretty big deal then.

Is it seen as a big holiday in the US?

If I were in the US I'd definitely consider it to be one of the prouder holidays. Doing what a lot of other nations still won't do in 2023 and outlawing slavery.

Any reason there seem to be more tickets on it this year?

In the UK we obviously hear a lot about independence day and thanksgiving but this year is the first time I've heard about Juneteenth.

Meh. It's a fair comment. I wanted to see what people on here thought as I imagine the reality is a lot more nuanced than what I'd find by googling.

I will present you with two options. You tell me which option you would prefer:

Option A) You live in an air-conditioned house with tv, internet, and the freedom to do whatever you want within your means while you continue showing up to work "flipping burgers at mcdonald's" from 9-5, 5 days a week.

Option B) You sleep in a barn on hay (if you're lucky) in the southern heat, you are beaten, tortured, raped, and you do whatever someone else tells you to do 24/7. You're murdered if you act up or if your owner feels like it. You spend your days, 7 days a week, all daylight hours, picking cotton from a field in the scorching heat.

You tell me if one is even comparable to the other. Now revisit your post. Do you think it was smart?

The reality of what the holiday is for? That's.. pretty objective, I'm not sure what you mean by "more nuanced"

You're hearing about it more recently because, while it's long ben a holiday, it only became a federal holiday in 2021 and this year is one of the first that a large chunk of employers gave it to employees as a day off.

The irony of this cobra post:

I guarantee anyone trying to diminish the value of Juneteenth or the horrors of slavery is almost certainly a right wing libertarian type that votes for, believes in, and supports corporate and big business capitalist dominance.

He would probably choke if you told him he sounded like a misguided Marxist!

It's when the state officially enforced the end to slavery is a better way to phrase it. And by State I mean the nation in general not just Texas.

Conservatives don't like it because even though it literally represents the abolition of slavery of black people, they are lashing out against anything and everything that advocates for black people because of everything they see happening.

It's the same with this whole "Pride Month" issue. This wasn't a huge issue in previous years because Pride Month in schools is literally just this harmless thing where schools go "you should accept and care for everybody regardless of who they love or what gender they are", just like Black History month (which has been recognized by schools for decades).

Probably because conservatives constantly talk shit about it and tell us themselves that they don't like it. Are we not supposed to believe them when they say those things?
