Well, maybe SE isn't doing as great, but look how fluctuating in quality their are when releasing big games, while their smaller budget products, like the Triangle Strategy, Trials of Mana Remake, Live a Live and Octopath Traveler 2 tier games are often a return to form. Imagine SE having the balls to release a mainline FF with the same design choices used in those products. It could work... there's a precedent, they released DQIX as a smaller game, and on the DS of all things. And its nothing like WoW. I've played both and I've only stuck to FFXIV. FFXIV feels like a mainline Final Fantasy game with online services. 16 looks like its going to be great and I have a lot of faith in him since I've been playing FF14 since ARR beta and have been on that journey for a long time.
