People claim they are happier but are you really? Is being cynical, jaded, and guarded against disappointment really better than having hope something can actually live up to your excitement?

Do they claim they're happier?
Being more resilient to disappointment is about the size of it.

I have no expectations or enthusiasm for new video games or movies. I learned that around the time everything started getting a reboot. I refuse to buy into the insane idiocy known as "hype."

Shut the hell up if that's how you're going to be.

Having things to look forward to is the only thing keeping my mental health from completely breaking down. Telling people they shouldn't look forward to things or are stupid for doing so is incredibly self-absorbed.

I couldn't do it. I can't pretend I don't get excited for stuff. Lying to yourself is a waste of time and energy, because deep down you always know the truth. If I end up disappointed, so be it.

I've been disappointed by far worse things than video games or movies many times and managed to stay happy, so the occasional disappointing release isn't something I can't handle.

I'm definitely not happy but that's unrelated. Hype wouldn't fix my depression I think.

Satisfied though? Yes 100%. I rarely experience disappointment in something not living up to my expectations and only extract enjoyment from something being better than I gave it credit for. Hype is a lie, just like hope.

That's definitely a good way to look at things. Be cautiously optimistic at best, just don't go all-in on the hype train.

It's a terrible way to look at things, you get to be happy for a brief moment when something you enjoy comes out, then go right back to "everything good is in the past and I don't expect to ever enjoy something again" for the vast majority of your life. If that somehow makes you happy, at least don't tell people they're stupid for not being able to live that way.

I dont generally get hyped about media, no. Mostly because Ive come to understand that something being hyped to hell and back doesnt actually mean it will be good, and there are unsuccessful things that are really good.

That doesnt mean I dont get excited about other things in life, or that I cant enjoy media when it does drop. I just dont talk myself into trying to enjoy it through anticipation.

Ive found that this does mean that there are some things I enjoy less, particularly things which rely heavily on nostalgia. Examples that spring to mind are the Resident Evil 2 remake and Spider-Man No Way Home, both of which I thought were quite poor, which is not the general consensus.

Im okay with that though. I have plenty of things to be happy about.

That's not actually what I said, but okay.

I said don't go all-in on the hype train.

As in, don't be one of the idiots who sent people death threats when No Man's Sky was delayed, or DDOS'd certain websites when they dared not to give Breath of the Wild 10/10.

Look at something coming up and think "that looks alright, it might be good." That's fine. Just don't get sucked up into mindless hype and start preordering things you haven't even seen trailers for (like the AAA game industry wants you to).

Looking forward to things gives me a reason to go forward and see a benefit to time passing, thinking about something I'm looking forward to is one of the only things that can blot out fear and anxiety to some extent for me. You do not know what everyone else is thinking when they do something completely harmless you don't approve of. And if you're going to say there's something wrong with me needing to focus on a game in a series I like to not be overwhelmed by fear when I'm alone with my thoughts, can you please consider whether the "AAA game industry" getting a sale is the bigger problem than the crippling mental illness?
