I'm finally in therapy and we're learning about self-acceptance, but I'm not understanding how one can practice it when their basic physiological needs such as food and shelter are not met? By accepting the fact that I'm not capable of earning enough, wouldn't that make me complacent in my pursuit to obtain a sustainable/normal living? Instead of feeling anxious and always stressed, I would instead feel okay with being homeless; which I feel like is a paradox. I can't help but feel like self-acceptance is a form of luxury that can only be practiced when a person has all their basic needs met. Otherwise I'm constantly worrying about having a roof over my head. How do I practice self-acceptance when the world is burning and the state of our economy is always uncertain? Am I supposed to accept that our world is a horrible place to live?

Self-acceptance takes place regardless of context. It's not about accepting the state of the economy, or your current situation. It's about learning to be ok about how you are, with all your positives and negatives.

So instead of worrying about having a roof over my head, I'm just supposed to accept the positive (which is free rent) and the negative (not having shelter)?

I'm skeptical so I thought asking the public would help me sculpt my own understanding.
