I've had to search for two new cars within the past year, and I really hate the pattern.

Entrance: someone greets you real specially (not a problem). Dealer's desk has multiple "awards" and some fun family pics to make it seem like they're homely
You: talk about what you want and why you like driving
Dealer: mainly give you the premium options on ONLY the stuff you kinda wanted but no alternatives unless you ask
You: test drive a car
Dealer: ask what you like about it, present you with buying scenarios (not a problem)
Dealer: say that the car is not coming for several months, ask you what you would settle for
You: [have to navigate this space when you need a car]
You: [leave dealership]

Dealer calls you back 1-4 days later saying the car that was 4 months away is going to be in NEXT WEEK. Artificial buying pressure.

You: Put reservation on car and/or down payment
Dealer: Fake phone calls
You: talk to negotiator
Negotiator: tries to sell you tons of options (not a problem)
Negotiator: tells you misleading information on financing opportunities for the car

You: agree to a finance plan to pay for the car
Dealer: lengthens the process to "hand off" the key (comission)

It's just so much BS. I've never bought something from anyone else that has such stupid rituals behind everything. Why can't you just objectively list me the options, I pick, I pay for the car with standard payments, and then I drive away? I hate the charades.

I could afford one at 25k thru financing and it totaled and I got full money back on it while financing so I made money

I hate the process of buying a car. It always takes 2-3 hours and it is so fucking annoying. 9 out 10 times the dude that tries to sell you extended warranty and all that shit usually just pouts and act passive aggressive the minute you reject all those additional shit.

FYI, Cars would cost $5000-6000 if auto-makers where allowed to sell them directly to the consumer.

Lol at CarMax responses, they and other equivalents are mostly responsible for the ridiculous used car prices.

I bought a new car once, the salesman on the phone agreed they would sell it to me with $5,000 down payment.

I drove over 45 minutes to get there, show up with the cash, and they pull me aside into some office and start acting aggressive and confrontational, and keep saying they will only take $10,000 down payment while trying to sell me a completely different car when I had already specified I didnt want that vehicle.

Total scum.

I have no complaints about CarMax. Almost sold my car there but I didn't have a replacement lined up.

But I like to lease. My approach is simple. I'll test drive wherever I want, but I'm only entertaining dealerships that will honor the price I configure online. Zero down or a portion of whatever equity I get from a lease buyout.

Nice, I guess the equivalent here would be FB marketplace or TradeMe. The process is relatively simple.

Alternatively, I once had a good experience buying a used Honda from a Lexus dealership for an absolute steal. Theyd had it on the lot for like six months and dropped the sale price to nearly $3,000 less than what it was worth, and it only had 1 previous owner with 50k miles.

It took me like 9 months of car hunting to find it though.
