Lesser known fact is Joker (or "P5 Hero") was going to be in P4 Ultimax and there's still voice lines in the game for him including his then planned main Persona Mephistopheles

Do you actually want some characters to be DLC or is that just lowered expectations talking?

And I'm completely fine with that. I'd rather they get started on Persona 6 already. I don't want an 8 year wait like it was between 4 and 5

P4AU probably sold like garbage on PC (I blame the lack of rollback at launch - I wanted until they added it and by then the community was already dead), so my guess is we'll never see a P5A

Should Persona 6 be based on Japan again? I'd like to see them go for a more international cast this time around.

There's a 0% chance of either of these things happening. Mainline SMT is where the adults from around the world deal with world-ending problems. Persona is where teens in Japan deal with world-ending problems at night while going to school in the day.

My lower/ real expectations would be

Joker, Skull, Panther + Morgana launch, with Fox/ Queen/ Navi/ Noir/ Violet being Year 1 DLC.

Crow, The Twins and the 3 shadows would be year 2 DLC

I'd love for the game to be international and have an adult cast. I remember an old article mentioning that the high school setting is the most relatable because it's something that almost everyone experiences. So we'll see if they stick to that.

And there's been speculation that they might use the original idea they had for Persona 5 in 6 instead. That involved the MC going on a backpacking journey

In the planning stages of Persona 5's development, director Katsura Hashino had envisioned a completely different concept for the game compared to what players got in 2017. Before the Tohoku natural disaster inspired Hashino to refocus the project's story, Persona 5 was intended to be a more globe-trotting adventure. Rather than exploring the interior of human's distorted desires, keywords during the initial planning were "self-discovery" and "journey," where players would spend the story exploring outside of school.

In the beginning concepts of Persona 5, Hashino and the development team were envisioning a far-reaching adventure that extended beyond the walls of a high school. Players would take on the role of a young adult on a backpacking trip, with the main story concepts focused on an adventure themed by self-discovery, coming-of-age, and identity. Going around the world to experience different walks of life, other countries' versions of oppression and prejudice, and defeating the enemies of world culture through the framing of the Gentleman Thief motif.

Mainline SMT is almost always young Japanese people too. Strange Journey is the big outlier (and fans sometimes debate whether it's mainline or not). But the numbered SMT games are all highschool aged protagonists in Tokyo.

I also thought the cast in 4 were adults but it turns out they're just college-aged.

Yeah I think it's ambiguous and they do look like young adults. I always assumed Flynn is 18-ish because they all do a kind of coming-of-age style ritual at the beginning of the game and later than 18 seems late for that. I don't think there's anything in the game or in the artbook saying specifically

I guess that and the circumstances in the first half of the game make it feel like this is more a traditional soldier training camp and not a high school.

The recent remaster of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax probably flopped hard. It doesn't help that they added rollback netcode like months later. They were better off just not even announcing a release date for it until they could get the rollback netcode in.

I don't think Atlus was going to make P5 themselves anyway. It probably would be sourced out to another company like P4A was.
