In the original Zelda game the Triforce peice is split into 8 identical sized pieces.

But that seems impossible when trying to work it out.

In the first game you're collecting the pieces because Ganon broke Zelda's. You already have the triforce of courage, and Ganon has the triforce of power. The quest was to restore the triforce of wisdom.
