Casually listening to people talk about their political beliefs can be eye opening <_<

Everything from supporting boycotting Bud Light over the recent Dylan Mulaney controversy, to blatant transphobia in "No non-birth pronouns in my house" to homophobia "I wouldn't let my daughter bring over a lesbian friend".

Not a large sample size so I'm not gonna attribute it to the entire military but almost every one I've met has been a huge piece of shit

I used to see it more. Now it's more like "I don't give a shit, just as long as you can do your job."

Usually these are your most annoying troops. They haven't punished anything but their credit score and reputation, and are first in line to work for a civilian security company.

Considering the demographics that recruiters frequently target, it's not really much of a surprise.

Young, low income people, especially minorities? Not really the demographics you typically associate with conservatives.

I'm curious as to if military folk's political views tend to change after being deployed.

My understanding is that a lot of it came from the fact Bush Jr was really the first President to push significant raises for troops. Combine that with Bush being in office during 9/11 and the GOP seizing on 'Patriots are Republican' and it was a perfect storm.

And even if they didnt, that demographic is inherently attracted to the military (to brutalise non-whites overseas) and law enforcement (to brutalise non-whites at home) anyway. Not to mention getting to play with guns.

I have several friends that were in the military that left lean but at the same time they said recruiters dont give a fuck who you are or what you did as long as they can get a waiver for it.

The military is a pretty large organization. I think the bad sorts who are racist, transphobic, ect, are a lot more common in some branches than others. You generally won't find that kind of person in the Navy, for instance, unless they are a marine.

Yeah, recruiters don't care as long as they can get you in the door. Especially in today's recruiting climate. A pulse is all that is required.

A lot of the people come from small towns and their career/education choices are limited. Military gets you out of the small town and gives you money for a four year degree of your choice.
Some come from military families.
Others want hands on experience or a 4-6 year paid internship.

I for one sympathize with the common grunt here. His girl would rather fuck Jody than him, but maybe with his tough guy political views and his badass new Camaro he bought at 25% APR with his signing bonus, he can win her back.
