"A House Democrat announced plans today to force a floor vote on a resolution to expel scandal-plagued Rep. George Santos from Congress, less than a week after the first-term Republican congressman pleaded not guilty to fraud charges.
The one-sentence resolution introduced by California Rep. Robert Garcia is a symbolic one; the measure is expected to fail but will force House Republicans to go on the record on their colleague from New York.

"George Santos is a fraud and a liar, and he needs to be expelled by the House," Garcia said in a statement. "Republicans now have a chance to demonstrate to Americans that an admitted criminal should not serve in the House of Representatives."

The motion is a privileged resolution, which when offered by a rank and file House member triggers a procedural vote in the next two days, although Republicans can still block the measure. Any motion to expel requires a two-thirds vote. But any GOP effort to block or table the resolution would still mean the House would vote."

Republicans the party of 'law and order' while continue to be the leading party of corruption and protecting shit bags like Santos.

Won't surprise me if the Gaslight Obstruct Project party (GOP) keeps him in even after everything else.

The vote has no impact. It doesn't really matter which way republicans vote on this. Republicans who vote to expel may actually have a tougher time winning reelection

That's what I mean. It puts everyone on record for or against a crook. In a swing district, that can make a difference.

I do expect Santos at least to go to jail but he can still serve while in prison.

I can't see any Republican vote to expell him.

Will be a sad day for the original author of the declaration of independence to be incarcerated. But as a respectable judge, I am sure he will show leniency towards himself.

Isnt he from a district that should really be blue? If he is expelled wouldnt it be pretty likely for a Democrat to win a special election? If Im right about any of that then Republicans will never vote to remove him will they?

Santos is my congressman.

There is a small chance that McCarthy's amendment to refer to committee fails. Simple majority for that. If that happens, then the expulsion vote happens.

And McCarthy has indicated that he might not wait for the courts if the committee returns a recommendation first.

They can make a Broadway show of it.

Democrats pushed a resolution to expel Santos, but Republicans instead voted along party lines 221 to 204 to send the matter to the House Ethics Committee. Seven Democrats voted present, including several on the House Ethics panel to head off concerns of a conflict of interest.

The one-sentence resolution introduced on Tuesday by California Rep. Robert Garcia was largely a symbolic one; the measure was widely expected to fail but forced House Republicans to go on the record about their colleague from New York.

"He's already admitted to lying and defrauding, he is an embarrassment to the House and to the country," Garcia told reporters earlier on Wednesday, days after Santos confessed to stealing a checkbook in Brazil to buy goods in 2008. "People want better from us and they want honest and ethical government."

I know the 7 Dems wasn't enough but voting present doesn't help.

Not going to happen. The GOP cares too much about its bare-bones majority. If they had, say, a 10+ member majority in the Senate, then it would be a different matter.

If McCarthy is serious about allowing an expulsion with just a committee recommendation, that would be a much lower and perhaps quicker way than a conviction in court.
