I made a topic on here a long time ago about whether or not CE considers Guns N Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers classic rock. General consensus was that GnR is classic rock, while RHCP isnt even tho RHCP predates GnR by 3 years.

Everlong came out in the late 90s iirc. Interesting to see how the classic rock "genre" changes over time

I think retro/classic music is anything 20+ years old. So at this point Radiohead is classic rock.

I hear pearl jam and soundgarden on classic rock stations.

Whatevs. Most of this stuff is 30 years old at this point. Classic rock stations were playing 60s 70s and 80s in the mid 90s. We old.

I did half assed research when I made that last topic and "classic rock" is essentially just a marketing gimmick to tug on nostalgia. There really is no time distinction in what makes a band "classic rock". Pretty sure I was hearing GnR on the classic rock station in the mid 90s, well before their 30 year mark or whatever.

This. Also, rock music is a big lineage of subgenres that over the years many varieties have been lumped together through radio formats. The so called "classic rock" of the 60s and 70s is better defined by western (USA and UK) oriented subgenres like folk rock, southern rock, blues rock, glam rock, prog rock, soft rock, yacht rock, heavy metal, psychedelic rock, latin rock, etc.. At least growing up, somehow older genres from the 50s and early 60s like garage rock, surf rock, merseybeat, rock n roll, rockabilly weren't often played with the ones I mentioned.

Then more 80s oriented genres crept into "classic rock" formats like new wave, AOR, hair metal, big music (U2), power ballads. So naturally many mainstream 90s genres would do the same. So now "classic rock" includes grunge, post-grunge, alt rock, geek rock, pop punk, etc..

So next will then be 00s mainstream rock genres like garage rock revival, emo, indie rock, post punk revival, nu metal etc.

There is no "classic rock" genre.
