Can you believe that? I think the main language for a few centuries before that was Etruscan. A lot of people spoke Venetian as well.

I wouldn't be surprised that it wasn't Italian as Italian as a national , latin-speaking identity probably also went extinct with the western roman empire in favor of a billion little kingdoms influenced by larger cultures in every which direction
