Depends on what you mean by "upper level"

High School/mandatory college calculus? Not particularly, average intelligence is probably going to get you at least a C+

Real Analysis/combinatorics/number theory etc? Yeah, you need to have some brains
Grad school stuff im guessing you need to be genuinely very smart

Caveat is that 'intelligence' is a nebulous term that can mean a lot of things and there are plenty of intelligent people who probably wouldnt do well in upper level maths

Not sure what you mean by upper level math, but I greatly believe you do not need to be very intelligent to be able to understand and pass most math courses (algebra, calculus, etc )
The idea that you need some "math brain" is a really bad idea that needs to die

I dunno. I honestly feel like it takes some talent.

I was in grad school and I had to take a bunch of 600 level statistics classes to get a doctorate. It was technically for a social science field. My undergrad program was in a college of liberal arts. I took 6 hours of math throughout my entire undergrad life.

I got to grad school struggled mightily with my stats classes. One of my professors told me anybody smart enough to get into the program was smart enough for the math, even if they didn't lead the class. I passed the first course but I *barely* passed the next one. I knew I had no shot at passing the next two I needed. I changed to a master's program instead which didn't require more stats.

I believe I am fairly smart, but I am garbage at anything past arithmetic. I find I can understand the concepts but struggle actually performing the tasks. It has been like this all my life.

I believe you need to be good at math to be good at math, and being good at math is a subset of intelligence.
