A 20 pound dumbbell is fucking giving me trouble, my triceps the next day are so fucking sore its crazy.

Also super intimidating hearing the more burly men talking about "macros" and some other shit and I have never been able to try to learn any of that. It felt like IV/EV training in pokemon; hearing that shit just made me quit the series entirely rather than try to comprehend it.

Good job on getting in there. Thats really the battle Ive learned. Take it easy on yourself, keep going, and go slowly. Keep it up and youll make it a habit.

Don't judge the gym by the first day back.

I worked out in HS for about 2 years, then took 10 years off, and have been lifting for 6ish years. It was definitely hard to get started again. I remember squatting and accidentally balancing the bar on my tailbone.

I'm just eating some chicken and then doing some free weights for a bit until I can build some sort of foundation underneath all this blubber.

Welcome back!

I started back after my tonsilectomy this year back in Feb and I was in the same boat so I feel you. Was weak as shit. KEEP AT IT!!! It comes back sooner than later! By April I was already able to lift 3x what I was lifting in Feb.

Yeah just start with a full body routine for a while. Depending on your goals that may be the only thing you really need to do. Just remember to take it slow as increasing weights too quickly can result in injury as your form starts to break down.

That's a good place to start. Ensuring protein intake is key for building muscle.

Don't overdo it. It's easy to get hurt, especially early on when you don't know your limits.

There's no imperitive or 'you must be at X by Y'. Even if you're just trying to lose weight or gain definition, take it slow.

Also, unless you're trying to make a permanent lifestyle change to where you do this routinely for life and have a fitness challenge or goal in mind, you don't really need to worry about macros. Just worry about calories in/out. Since you're working out, you'll obviously burn more but make sure you're not overcompensating for what you're burning.

Counting your calories and macros is a good practice for a week or two, but there's nothing wrong with eyeballing it after you get a sense of where to be. I've counted calories for one week in 21 years of lifting, and I've never counted macros except sometimes protein.

Yeah I dont understand this diet and exercise works too. How do I know how many reps and how much weight Im supposed to do for my size? How many calories am I supposed to be eating to lose weight without putting my body into starvation mode? 2500 will just make me gain weight lol.

Theres a lot of secrets that people either just figure out on their own, go to school for, or pay to learn. Gym bros are gate keeping

I remember the soreness was a good feeling. It was like feedback that your workout had an effect.

After a while I stopped getting them. Even lifting to failure, I wasn't getting the soreness. It was disappointing.

Soreness is not necessarily an indicator that you had a good workout and the lack of soreness does not mean your workout was ineffective. If that was the case, every lifter would basically do nothing but eccentric training (lowering the weight slowly) to maximize soreness.
