Not only does it not save any time as its certainly not a quicker way of saying the time but it requires a tad more thought from the listener and can easily be misheard as "9:10." or "10:09"

Absolute garbage ass way to say the time

In Spanish, they do math to state the time in the second half hour.

So a quarter to 9 would be Nueve menos quince (9 minus 15) <_< to be fair, the long form way would be Ocho y cuarenta y cinco (literally 8 and 40 and 5)

So it could always be worse.

You all are toxic as hell here so that is pretty ironic.

Imagine calling someone unhinged and insufferable for venting a very minor frustration on a message board.

I'm bored at work so I like to post little vents. Its not a big deal but its nice getting even the trivial things off your shoulders. Just standing around waiting for things boredly browsing and posting.

Its not unless there are extenuating factors.

If someone says "9 to ten" while its noisy at work and they are elderly with a weak raspy quiet voice its extremely easy to mishear as "9:10" or "10:09" for example.

Its just one of many little things people do that chip tiny bits of my time and patience away. When you have tons of little time wasters,inefficiencies, rudeness etc it adds up.

I have always preferred digital clocks so maybe that's why I agree with TC. I like things being simple. Just say 8:45 instead of "15 til 9"

My parents say the latter and it always annoys me

It stems from most clock's "back in the day" being analog and not digital, so the visual is that of a pie being cut into 4 pieces, so calling it "a quarter to/quarter after" was easier to see at first glance.

'Half five' is how the dutch say 4:30. I can imagine that often leads to misunderstandings when driving foreigners.

Also if 'ten to nine' is irritating wait til you all hear about how our 4:20 = 'ten to half five'.

I mean the context is mostly when I am at work so I am losing time and getting yelled at because people are long winded, unclear, dawdle etc.

I work food service so when people are unclear, slow, etc. it often means someone else gets pissy at me for the slowdown.

This particular thing is extremely trivial in the vast majority of situations but like I said it adds up. Tons of little things and many are trivial for the customer to not do so I can keep a better workflow and make everyone happier.

Like looking at the bill and figuring tip out before approaching the register instead of arguing with your wife about it for 30 seconds while a line builds up.
