I think our pop culture has many more facets than those days, I think there's prolly just too much going on to have 1 person be so big, so ubiquitously followed.

The fact that people can load up Spotify or YouTube and play literally anything they want means they no longer have to decide which record to spend their money on since now their money buys them all the records.

I don't think you can do much new with music at this point, there's just too much music out there. There's no lick or progression that hasn't been done before. It's more about expression, esthetic, and image. If it's pop, it's almost all image.
