Realistically I don't think Charles' reign will be long enough to see such sweeping change.

More chance of William being the final one, as he'll probably be in the job for a while.

I hope so, but likely to be William at earliest.

And even then I doubt it. Far too many still support them

This.

At any rate, the British royal family is massively popular in Britain, so I dunno why anyone thinks this republican ideal is more than a far off dream.

This makes me sad because she always seemed awesome. I know fuck all about Charles. But hell my road/street is named after her and most others in the neighborhood are named after US presidents. My grandmother was also named Elizabeth. I understand the disagreement with the idea of monarchy in general, but specific hostility to specific royal family members... that I don't really get. But again I know fuck all about Charles lol

All Im getting at is that this idea that the royal family are massively popular stems, least in part, from the popularity of the previous figurehead.

When I said "proof", I meant actual proof. Not you saying something like it's fact without any evidence to back it up.

For the record, TMZ, The Globe, Daily Mail, and the Inquirer do not meet a standard of proof to be used as emergency toilet paper. Please keep that in mind.

Cute. The Ministry of Defence stated they wouldn't put the, at the time, third in line for the throne on the front lines when it was announced the Blues and Royals were going to Iraq. He was too high value a target, and also it would cause undue risk to literally everyone around him since he was an HVT.

Also, Harry's kids won't be half black. They'll be quarter black. Megan herself has a white father.

Its possible. He certainly has a significant amount of supporters at the moment.

However, I also wouldnt completely rule out the possibility that Charles might become unpopular enough to make the throne something of a poison chalice for William.

I mean, I dont particularly care either way. It wouldnt affect me too drastically even if I still lived there, and I cant see myself ever moving back.

Not a chance

Charles won't even live very long.

That said I do not believe the Monarchy will live to the 22nd century.

It's going to die out after Liz died. But it won't be THAT quick. Most of the UK still supports the monarchy, especially the English and like 90% of the over 60s.

You'll have to wait for the current over 60s to die and the dispassionate youths to grow up before the Republican movement reaches half the nation and even then it's gonna be a loooong dispute.

Just look at todays ceremony. That seems like a complete success. Charles has a lot of room to grow as a popular figurehead

You understand that Elizabeth presided over the intentional destruction of the Scottish economy as carried out by Thatcher? The war crimes brought about by the occupation of Northern Ireland, the Falklands war, and more minor bullshit than I have time to name off. So no, she wasn't a cool lady.

There are no cool monarchs and there is no justification for their existence in the 21st century.

Wait you think the British were the bad guys in the Falklands war?

You know the people in the Falklands overwhelmingly want to be British right?

Besides you're missing his point. Liz lived through WW2. She lived through everything you just named and a dozen more hard times. People were born, lived lives and had/raised kids who had her as their queen the entire time.

And she was good at presenting herself calmly and with intelligent authority.

Charles comes across a doddering silver spoon weirdo. He has no presence, no charisma, doesn't have the emotional connection to the country that Liz had and seems remarkably less with it. At least he doesn't know how to act like he knows what's going on.

Liz 2 made millions of people love the Monarchy
The Monarchy is trying desperately clawing to make people love Charles

That's the difference.

There is no one in the country (hyperbole, I'm sure there's a dozen weirdos) who looks to Charles for hope and a role model in tough times. Even amongst hardcore royalists who love the Monarchy as a concept. There were 2 whole generations who did so frequently for Liz 2.

Fuck sake even Vladimir Putin was like "Shit Liz 2? She was cool mang..." when she passed. And Russia hates the UK more than any other country on Earth right now. That's the respect she commanded.

No, I'm not blaming her for the Falklands, but I do blame her for the extremely heavy handed approach to dealing with it. But it was more about flexing military might and proving that the empire still had clout (which it didn't) than about necessity.

Why would they ever give it up? I think it would take someone squandering their wealth, and the wealth of the crown, for that to ever happen. As long as they are as rich as they are, they have the power to maintain it. And I don't really ever see that changing.

Right? Heavy handed would have been invoking Article 5 of NATO and then counter-invading Argentina to hurl the military junta that tried swiping the Falklands straight into the Pacific Ocean from the ARgentine Capital. Even if Article 5 doesn't cover the Falklands, per Article 6. The US loves to swing its dick around, but Thatcher REALLY wanted to prove that the UK could still defend their territory.

They could become just a rich family like we have in the US. But lose their royal status. And the government would stop giving them money. If they maintain their wealth it should be of their own responsibility and business skill, and no help from tax money being paid to them

Why do you all think Charles will have a short reign? Hes 74, in good health, and has received the best healthcare available his entire life. His parents died at 96 and 99. Hes going to make it to his 90s unless theres earthquake that kills him or assassination or something. Id say its 50/50 he makes it to his 25 year. William would then be 65 when his reign starts.
