Current Events > Today was one of those bad days at work, working with at risk youth.

I am one of the Supervisors for a program that operates Group Homes for at-risk teens. Substance abuse, mental health stuff, trauma, etc.

Today we busted into a youths room who barricaded themselves in and hung themselves.

We provided CPR for 10 straight minutes before EMT's arrived. They were blue before we ever got to them. Miraculously after like 40 minutes of work between ourselves and EMT's we got a pulse from them. Not breathing on their own but got a pulse.

We chatted literally 20 minutes before this all happened. They seemed alright. The only reason we broke into their room was a friend of theirs in the community literally drove over to the house and told us they were concerned. Had that not happened we likely would have not busted into his room and he would be gone for sure.

This is the first time I've ever seen a suicide attempt through hanging. It is uncool.

That sounds extremely scary. Sorry you had to go through that, and hopefully there's a positive outcome in the end. Do you know anything about his condition now?

Management has actually been awesome. They showed up and made sure we all met with some mental health specialists immediately afterwards. They told us to prepare to have some sleepless nights and just a rough few days for now. We will do a professional debrief later this week.

That's good to hear. Too many times, I hear about debriefs missed in such situations, after the incident is resolved.

Just got word that there is too much brain damage from loss of oxygen. He won't make it.

You can do everything right and just not get the positive result.

I'm very sorry to hear that. You did everything you could, and made all the right decisions. Don't blame yourself for one second, you were there for him and did your best.

I'm more concerned as a supervisor how do I help other youth and staff through it. I'm no grief counselor or anything of that nature but it is going to be part of my expectations to help however I can.

Oh wow. Scary story TC sorry to all parties involved.

I can't help imagine how much of a quality of life the guy has even after you guys were able to get a pulse on him after unknown amount of time.

Is everybody in the mentality that he has passed?

I think as a supervisor, guiding them to the professional mental help as needed is all you are expected to do.

I'm so sorry for everyone involved, TC.

We provide prescriptions for some of those youth homes and it's sad when those kids have so many health problems or just straight up run away.

Ate a pint of ice cream and played some video games and watched some anime with my wife. Did a nice night of just self care.

Back to the grind tomorrow. Ooof

Tough day today. Everyone sad and dour and just unsure what to do with all the emotions.

They were taken off life support overnight so they no longer have to fight.

Management was great again today. All the Supervisors got to be together and just you know, mourn and hug and be sad together. We were told to stop working today and just be people who lost a youth they worked with.

They told us we did everything right and they were proud of everything we did. It was good to hear.

I'm glad they're handling it well, and I hope you're doing alright.

Yeah we got some group therapy done on Friday which was great for me. I know some people don't get much from group but I do.
