I liked that you could go in a lot of buildings. I remember having multiplayer standoffs in chicken restaurants from the cops

Its the only one that I never go back and play. It feels like the prototype for what GTA V perfected.

I remember enjoying it, but the cover system and driving sucked, IMO, and the lack of checkpoints made things really frustrating.

the DLCs helped fix some of those issues, though.

No. Bad driving made me not want to play it anymore. Unless there are pc mods that fix this issue, it will remain that way.

Yes, though it might be a bit dated now. It has flaws, but everyone exaggerates them and act like the game is bad. The story, characters, setting, and overall atmosphere are the best in the series.

I've played through most of it recently and still like it. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be honestly. It's the wonky aiming and cover system that has aged the worst.

Niko Belic is still a great character and the overall plot holds up. You can see the roots of the Red Dead games start here.

I liked GAT4 for the most part. I had no issue with the cover system, since in the earlier GTAs the options were to shoot the foes before they could start shooting or to tank the damage in the open.
The driving wasn't bad either. It's just semi-realistic. Adapt and survive!

I didn't like that Niko's friends would make a call every twenty minutes to play darts or go drinking. it's cool the first few times, but after a while becomign a hermit feels very appealing. The perks they provided were of very limited use, too. Free taxi rides, a gunshop that comes when called, and a heli ride across the city are okay, but not that great. The temporary posse is perhaps the best, and the car bomb the least useful.

Also, money is of little use outside of purchasing weapons, and after one certain mission, money itself becomes irrelevant anyhow. That Niko still takes jobs for the money from some slimy mobster when he literally has more cash than he can spend feels very contrived.

Sigs are rather pointless, except if it's to showcase animation and images.

Nope. I played recently for nostalgic sake and it's not all that great. The driving is bad, the shooting is bad, the controls are slow and stiff, and there isn't much to do after completing the game. Both GTA V and GTASA are superior to this.

For me GTA IV was a cautionary tale of be careful of what you wish for.

At the time I liked GTA VC and SA. But I did want a more modern, grittier and less ammoral GTA.

I got that in the story front. Which I why I like the story of GTA IV. But the gameplay and world building also got that treatment and it was less fun to play.

the cover system in GTAIV (can't remember how it was like in the DLCs) was too "magnetic"/sticky.

like, if you used a car for cover, it was annoying to maneuver that.

The big problem about it is there's a weird hitch when you're aiming from cover. It's really hard to explain.

Anyone remember that one mission in GTA 4 where you had to go to a vantage point to overlook some meeting that eventually goes south and you have to snipe everyone?

I liked how alive the city was, and there were alot of fun characters. But there just wasn't much to do besides the story. The only side missions were racing, hunting criminals, and finding cars. And don't get me started on the whole 200 pigeons stuff.

It was fun on XBL, just hanging out at the airport or doing the swing glitch.
Probably the worst for single player though.
