Super Mario Bros Jumps Past New Milestone With $900M+ Global Box Office

Illumination/Nintendo/Universals The Super Mario Bros Movie has notched yet another milestone, crossing the $900M mark globally with Tuesdays grosses included.

Through 21 days in release, the worldwide cume is $901.2M with $444M from domestic and $457.2M at the international box office.

As we pointed out at the weekend (whose actuals came in at $875M global, higher than the Sunday estimates), its just a matter of when the Aaron Horvath/Michael Jelenic-directed adaptation tops the $1B threshold. Recall that Korea opens today and Japan is due to join the party on Friday. In the former, the early estimated opening day, plus previews, is $774K. That figure is not reflected in the totals above.

The news is terrifically timed and a Wahoo! for Universal which will be hosting its slate presentation this afternoon here at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

A reminder of some key stats this juggernaut has mushroomed to so far: Biggest film of 2023 global and domestic; No. 2 animated film since 2019 worldwide (behind Minions: The Rise of Grus $942.5M); No. 2 animated studio film since 2019 internationally (behind Rise of Gru at $572.8M); No. 5 biggest Universal animated film of all time globally (behind Minions, Despicable Me 3, Despicable Me 2 and Gru); No. 7 studio title released since 2019 worldwide...

Yeah this movie is going to make over a billion by this projection. I'll fully admit I was wrong. It looks like Nintendo is probably going to stick with Illumination for their future projects because if there's one thing Illumination studios is good at doing, it's marketing and making bank.

Miyamoto Says Negative Reviews Of Mario Movie Helped It Grow

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a bona fide hit. In its first five days in theaters, the new animated film brought in over $375 million globally. And despite a lot of negative and meh reviews from critics, its expected to cross a billion dollars at the box office soon. In fact, according to Shigeru MiyamotoMarios dadthose poor reviews actually helped the film become so successful.

Released on April 5, The Super Mario Bros. Movie had an endless amount of hype and marketing ahead of it as people prepared for the first Mario film in nearly 30 years. (The last one was the disastrous and awful live-action film from 1993. Remember that thing?) Once it hit screens earlier this month, the new CG-animated Mario filmcreated by Minions makers Illumination Studiosfans flooded theaters to see it. While many fans enjoyed the film, the critical reception has been less than great. Our own Carolyn Petit called it a transparently hollow commercial product that feels like it was designed in a lab and she wasnt alone. Other reviews were also negative. But Miyamoto says that actually helped the film grow bigger.

Ahead of the films release in Japan, Miyamoto spoke to the press in the country about the films debut, its box office success around the globe, and negative reviews from critics. VGC translated his answers and reported that he was surprised by just how successful the film had been.

I did have a level of expectations that this movie would also do well, said Miyamoto. But I was very surprised that it went beyond what I could have imagined when it finally came out.

Miyamoto attributed some of the films box office success to luck, but also shouted out negative reviews, too.

You need some luck to achieve this level of success for a film, explained Miyamoto. While many foreign critics have given the movie relatively low ratings, I think that also contributed to the movies notoriety and buzz....

The 15 countries that makes most movies produces over 6000 movies per year.
It exist what, 51 movies that have passed $1 Billion?
Even movies that are really successful have a hard time to pass $1 Billion, so it is not strange that people didnt believe it would do it.

I don't think there's anything ulterior here. I think it's the fact that it's a faithful movie for an IP that's been popular across 5 decades. It would have made this much regardless of the studio.

The story of Mario is about as clich as it gets though.

Unlikely hero transported to unknown (to him) land where he has to help save the land from and bad guy.

Only thing different from the original story is that Peach wasn't playing the damsel in distress this time around.

Illumination Studios are masters at marketing and basically cracked the code to make bank. Every movie they released so far had a bigger marketing budget than their actual production budget. It's to a point where I consider Illumination Studios more of a Marketing studio than a Production one. But no matter what, you're always going to get a high ROI if you fund Illumination studios. I just honestly wish they made better films... granted I do consider Super Mario Bros to be their best film yet because at least you can tell a lot of love and charm was put into it.

The production budget is only as small as it is for most their movies because they spend most of their time animating sticks of butter with faces and don't actually need voice acting because they cannot vocalize consonants.

But hey it's cute and it's funny so it sells.

Nah it was pretty much all Illumination with just Miyamoto as creative oversight. They made an internal movie studio so that they don't have to do through illumination again
