They obviously speak the same language, so you can't argue some sort of species divide in language. She also knows how to read and write, as she read that contract and SIGNED THE DAMN THING in very nice handwriting by the way.

Hell, she could have just kissed HIM and it would have been fine. I just watched the scene, and while she says he has to "fall in love with you", she says, "That is to say he has to kiss you"

Bad plot hole Disney. Bad.

Ariel is really dumb. Ursula told Ariel that the men up there don't like a lot of blather, they think a girl who gossips is a bore. So Ariel believes that on land, it was much preferred for ladies not to say a word. The men aren't all that impressed with conversation. True gentlemen avoided it when they could. But a lady who's withdrawn? They dote and swoon and fawn.

So Ariel went up there with the belief that it's the one who holds her tongue who gets her man. She was trying to win Eric over with her looks, her pretty face, and of course, the all important BODY LANGUAAAAAGE.
