idk, 500 bucks or less a decent range for a first firearm? 32 years old, went to the range and took that beginner class once a few years ago. Moved since then so I have to reapply for a new FID. Don't have any particular plans for it and don't live in a terrible neighborhood, but figured why not. What should I be looking at?

Do you want a pistol small enough that you can conceal in public or would you be open to a normal or gaudier size?

It's NJ so I'm not getting a concealed carry at any point in my lifetime due to how strict gun laws are.

In that case just pick from whatever the government allows you to have.

Do you have anywhere nearby to go trap or skeet shooting? That is the most fun shooting IMO, but its not cheap ammo. Well, seems like no ammo is cheap anymore, but its around $.50 a shell and you do 50 targets in a round, normally a few rounds. And some places require you use break action so you sometimes need a rather specific shotgun.

but its by far the best IMO.

9mm striker fire pistol from any reputable manufacturer really would be best for you

Smith & Wesson M&P, Sig 320, multiple Glocks models 17, 19, all you can find for slightly under $500. They are all full-sized pistols which will help lessen recoil

Hmm, in that case any plans to ever concealed carry (legally of course)? If not, go for a larger gun. A rock island armory 1911 can still be bought for under $500 (before taxes). A lot of it is aesthetic, honestly. What do you think looks cool? Avoid Hi-Point (imo, some will disagree).

i think a few Glocks are available under $500.

there are a few revolver options, but Id want at least $800 to be satisfied with a revolver now, I think.

but figure out what you like the looks of and then go hold a bunch and see how they feel in your hand and then just know the brands to avoid. Like 95% of gun manufacturers are really good. A few make cheap shit, pretty much everything else is reliable if handled and maintained properly.

If I was carrying in public or at the very least actually buying, maybe. But this is just to get the firearm ID card to actually be able to buy at some point in the future if I choose. It's ridiculous.

Have you ever purchased a firearm?

if it's for just protecting your home I would just say get a shotgun. If you're in a high risk situation, you don't want to take the time to aim

And no, I don't own a gun. Well, I do, but I gave it to my brother to keep because I can't have it around me. Just a hunting rifle
