Ok, so you have a giant conventional surface and space military including both a navy and airforce of Assault Suits/Mobile Armours... but you get a budget request for a single wing of Gundams...

This would seriously underfund the rest of your military, but the advantages are apparent; One gundam has the powerhouse to compete with almost an entire fleet of AS/MAs

So, how would you push back?

bullets

other gundams

large asteroids

alien goo

gaslight the pilot by telling them their mother never loved them so they just go insane and then self destruct themselves like a moron

also, realistically, if the random nameless mobile suits actually operated properly instead of with stormtrooper logic, gundams would go down a lot easier with just focused fire from all directions. thunderbolt was kinda more realistic in this way, because iirc there is only one gundam and it's mostly just regular mobile suits, and spoilers the gundam lost though i guess to be fair it was more of a 1v1 and involved literal actual magic, so maybe not the greatest example

The greatest weakness of a gundam is it's size. It's much larger than it needs to be in order to carry a weapon which makes it a much larger target than it needs to be.

I would presume it's a similar situation as a Spartan-II, yeah you're making a one of a kind unmatched killing machine but he can only be one place at a time and can't single-highhandedly win a war for you.

are you sure a single spartan 2 can't single handedly win a war

Yeah, sure the obvious exception compared to every other Spartan 2 that died.

yes

but not the single spartan that single handedly ended the war though, he's still around. ig there's other 2's still around not dead, but they're mostly filler spartans for some reason

as an aside, where the fuck is arbiter.

Teen angst. Space swans. Having to grasp the sheer inhumanity of humanity while possessing an inhuman power of empathy.

In many Gundam canons the limitation is that they require some level of New Type-ness from the pilot to be exceptional. The RX-78 line also often runs out of ammo and/or energy in the series; particularly for the beam rifle.

In 0079 the Gundam project doesn't seem to be particularly expensive or anything. It seems a lot more like a last ditch effort to get ahead of Zeon since the Earth Federation doesn't have time to catch up to Zeon's number of mobile suits in a conventional way. The EF is stuck with a bunch of mobile ball's and guncannons and shit until late in the series when the GMs start to hold ground against the worn down number of Zakus.

As for actual scientific weaknesses of mobile suit/Gundam design, yeah there's plenty of places to go after a Google search. It's kinda lame that they make no sense as real world weapons.

ya, i'm talking about gundams specifically in a universe where mobile suits/armour/wanzers are already established...

In the real world we aren't even up to loaders.

"Gundamium" and its equivalent in other settings, a metal/alloy needed to make quality Gundam/MS, tends to be scarce.
