except

i had to sudo apt-get remove iio-sensor-proxy

otherwise the laptop screen starts up from a standard boot upside-down.

just normal stuff you know

What is linux

It's an opensource OS like windows with many distros. Almost very secure because making viruses is basically useless. Not saying that it doesn't happen though.

Linux and Red Hat are mainly used for servers and Ubunto and the likes are mainly used for regular PCs and workstations.

If I'm looking to buy an old PC to put dual boot Linux and Windows for college classes, how much ram do you think I should be looking for these days? I think the Mac I'm using right now has 8gb but it runs out once in a while. I'd like to play Civ and C&C on Windows, but that's probably as intensive as it'd get.

8gb isn't enough in 2023 unfortunately. i mean it might be on some distros, but you will probably hit the ceiling on that with windows easily as you're planning on dual booting.

i would find something that could either upgrade to 16gb, or ships with 16gb.

lately i've been into buying (decently spec'd) old chromeos hardware for cheap and stripping chromeos out in favor of pop os but that's a whole process.

also this will be super useful if you ever find yourself open to gaming on linux with steam
https://www.protondb.com/explore

as it basically lists the compatibility of games

I was able to run Civ just fine on 8GB, haven't tried C&C with that old setup (but 16GB handles it fine)

Games like Civ V and below and even the newest C&C games run great on 4GB of ram.

super nice apple music client for linux with discord and last.fm integration

https://cider.sh/

i just wish it had lossless streaming, sits at 256, which is acceptable but i think it's probably because of a limitation apple put on it. they also built in some extra stuff that's supposed to make the music sound better but i'm still checking that out.

either way 256 is still better compared to the apple music website streaming music in a tab.

also set up my icloud mail with geary so i don't have to have icloud mail open in a tab anymore.

Are flatpaks really that fundamentally different from snap though? (other than the obvious licensing thing)

i'm not sure of all of the technical differences but .deb files are actually optional for most software in the pop app store, there's a dropdown to select deb. you can still download them from websites and install them as needed as well.

what i do know is that flatpak is sandboxed so it's supposed to be more secure, similar to snap. that said, flatpaks have much less overhead compared to snap packages and run much better/require less resources so overall they're considered better.

so i purchased the hp chromebox g2 with an intel core i7-8650u 16gb / 64gb for $130.

plan is to throw it into dev mode, remove the write protect screw and get coreboot on it, use clonezilla on my current install to put it on a 500gb m.2 nvme ssd and slide that sucker into the chromebox. the point is to have a mini pc for use with my samsung m7 32" monitor because i'm currently using a laptop on it and the ergonomics of using a trackpad and a keyboard is kinda subpar. i'll attach a decent mouse and keyboard and be done with it.

overall the project will be less than $200 usd which is pretty ideal.

i think i could find a use case for one give their versatility

that, and connecting via HDMI to a TV w/ different resolution and refresh rate is a bit janky on Linux

that could be a fun project. i ended up using pop os which is a derivative of ubuntu so most of the stuff i do matches up with ubuntu support articles. it's kind of nice having a lot of support out there to reference.
